Hi Sunjay, another ex-pat here though a bit north of you in Vancouver!
I tried to have a look but the images are too small unfortunately. You don't need to reduce the size if you use something like photo bucket which is free to join, that way we could have a good look. Its definitely a keeper though from what I have seen so far.
Looking forward to seeing some higher resolution pictures!

Okedoke, so in the middle are three separate markings, the top left is the silver content which is .925, to the right is the mark of the London Assay office. These are specifically import markings made after 1907. Now, the last one on the bottom middle of the three is the date mark but I can't quite make it out, However.. Looking at the case number it looks like it starts with 20 I can't quite make out the other numbers but no matter. 20 would date it to 1925 I believe and then cross referencing that with the Hallmark confirms that from what I can make out from the picture to my eyes anyway. The shield with "W&D" inside is Wilsdorf & Davis Have a look at this page. You can see all the date marks. Look up 1925 and see if you think it looks like a gothic "K" to confirm this. www.silvercollection.it/englishsilverhallmarks.htmlIf we can get a picture of the movement next we should be able to tell what movement it is! Hope that helps.

OK, so, from the picture though I can't see the movement number I feel confident in saying this is a Rolex Hunter movement 10 1/2 lignes caliber 700 series. Now this is good as those were first manufactured in 1923 to replace the fabled Rebberg movement. Believe it or not the Hunter movements were made right up to 1969!
So. If I am right with all of this it correlates nicely to this watch being made in or around 1925.
Hope that helps.

Ian, thank you so very much for taking your time to look, research and give me the feedback - much appreciated. You are so impressively well informed! I will take another look with a magnifying glass and check the marks against the link you sent. 1925 sounds about right and I will ask my dad if he remembers anything about grandpa's watch. In gratitude for your help SunJay

No worries sunjay I love doing things like this and find it really relaxing to do after a days work. Its a beautiful watch and I really encourage a service of the movement so that it can be both preserved and worn. Just make sure you tell whomever does the service that you simply want a service, no polishing of the case, no restoring of the dial, hands or crown, just a movement service. I feel its essential to keep all that lovely family history intact, it is after all an heirloom piece which I think is the most valuable of all watches. There is a wonderful company in the UK that specializes in making straps for this type of watch, what is even better is that they also sell authentic sterling silver buckles for them as well and a piece as special as this deserves a lovely strap and buckle I feel, well worth the expense. Here is a link and let me know if I can be of any more help. Which part of the UK did you come from? I used to live in Devon. www.vintagewatchstraps.com/index.htm

Hello again Ian, Which by the way is my fathers name. Thank you agin in for the suggestions and info. As I am leaving to go back to the states thus Saturday, I think I will leave it in UK until my next trip home, when I have more time to seek out the appropriate services. I'm from Hampshire - Old Bedhampton area near Portsmouth. Depending on your age and musical taste, you may remember an all girl band in the early eighties called The Belle Stars. I was the lead guitar player - also wrote some of the hits and sang back ups. I have a degree in art from the Royal College in London where I spent my student days and I now teach at a college in California. How about you? Blessings SunJay

Do I remember the Belle Stars!! flipping heck! You now have me singing sign of the times in my head! How wonderful, thank you for some really wonderful music back then. Oh, this has made my day!
As for Old Bedhampton, well, small world! I moved to Devon in 1970 but before that I spent my first years in Fratton, Emsworth and Leigh Park! My brothers still live there, one in Waterlooville and the other on Hayling Island. Do you remember Puffing Billy as you went on to the island from Havant?
You made my day I can tell you, such happy memories brought back!

sunjay or Sarah-Jane please don't sell that watch whatever you do. It may only be worth a few hundred bucks, but in my opinion it's priceless. Welcome to our little forum We're glad you're here
