I found a Timex that I fell in love with but they don't come up that often and when they have I have missed them by a hair. I mentioned and showed the style to a fellow member on the Timex forum. Little did I know at the time how connected with Timex he is! He sent me an email saying that he had a very very special version of the one I liked. He knows one of the old head designers who worked on this watch amongst others back in the late 50's. Turns out they would hand build prototypes using special chrome plated plastic cases to which they would fit hand assembled dials and movements. These then would go through evaluation processes until they received approval from the top brass to go into production. All the dimensions would be copied so as to mass manufacture them. Well, it just so happens this chap as three examples of this particular pre production prototype which he acquired along with a bunch of other special stuff from this retired designer and is very generously letting me have one at a giveaway cost of $60 including shipping which is astonishing considering the nature of the watch! I just sent payment and he will ship it out tomorrow with some extras which I have no idea what they are! Here is a picture of it he sent me. It is to all intents and purpose new. Its only purpose to be shown to the top brass at Timex for approval to move into production. Imagine wearing something that went through the hands of these people who eventually liked it enough to rubber stamp it for production. I can't wait to strap it to my wrist! The image is a little yellow but the watch should be a silver tone. Its the ultimate Timex expression of Bauhaus I think and completes my Bauhaus collection very nicely!

Ian, you are cornering the market on unique Timex watches! So is this a chrome plated plastic prototype or one that was made from metal for final approvals? Is he sending any documentation to keep the historical provenance with the watch?

It seems that way Roger!
No documentation as this was a designers perk rather than anything official. The case is plastic and its the first prototype model, thats how all of the designs started out apparently. Its more than strong enough to wear and he is including the special spring bars that go with this case, not sure how they are special though! Timex went on to use the same plastic for their military watches! It does have a stainless steel back though
I am going to put a simple flat black un-grained leather strap on this one to keep it Bauhaus simple I think. Its not going to be worn a great deal admittedly as its so special but it will be worn!

Way cool! I wouldn't wear it, you would never forgive yourself for putting the first nick in the case.

Cheers Al, This one I am going to be extra careful with. I am thinking of putting it on Dave's NATO after some thought. I reckon it might look really great on that.
He is finishing checking all is well with it timing-wise and will ship it out tomorrow so it will be here soon!
I have asked him about a couple other watches that are leaving holes in the very special Timex's category as well. One of the Military ones and one of the 600 ft 1960's stainless steel divers watches!

Wow, congratulations! Another well deserved watch ending up in a good home! Also another portion of Timex history (which is rather rich!) that I've learned from you. Can't wait for this one to arrive!

So bearing in mind the Bauhaus principals of form and function of this watch I have been thinking about the strap. it has to be slim with no stitching I feel but I did not want plain black as researching the Bauhaus movement I have learned that one of the guiding principals of it is to combine nature and the elements with industrial design. A light bulb went off in my head. How about a simple dark green strap! I found one from the folks I purchased my red Mickey strap from and it's on the way. what do you think?

I like it.
Simple and thin, should fit that watch well.
While significantly different, its simplicity reminds me on the OEM straps that come with Nomos watches.

Thanks Chip, its actually turned out even better as Alicia at Strapsco on eBay just sent me a message to say that she only has the tapered version in stock and I actually prefer that to the squared end. I highly recommend this store. I have purchased several watch straps from them now and all have been great quality and great prices stores.ebay.ca/StrapsCo?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

The strap arrived today and yet another high quality for not a lot of cost from this company. Same brand as the Sharkskin (Diloy) I got from them so its made in Spain and has that lovely Spanish leather smell to it. Nice and flat and a deeper green than the image shows and actually thats perfect I think. Now all I need is the watch!

The dial almost has a paper like quality to it. Is it? I know that some of the older watches had paper overlays on a metal substrate.
