I can't wait to see the wrist shots in December! I'm sure they'll do it just for you! I've been thinking about this topic quite a bit actually. One day, when I have that amount of money to "play" with chances are I too would get a watch like this instead of an older Ferrari. Either way, I'll eventually have both! The watch (as a WIS) seems to be my "priority" if you will.

Well, I am late to this thread, but I am all behind you on this one, Ron. That platinum model is stunning, and bet it looks even moreso in person! It would just be nice to feel the weight of the platinum watch on the wrist.
Can't wait to see pics.
Cheers, Carl

I was going to mention as well that I'm really partial to watches that fit the under-the-radar description. Which the platinum Day-Date does in a way. Unless you run into someone who really knows their Rolex watches, you will be the only one who knows how precious the metal really is that you have on your wrist!

Shiva at Traditional Jewelers in Newport Beach just called me on the phone a few minutes ago stating they just got the new Platinum Rolex Day-Date 40 in with the dial that I want.

Always best to do so a few times before taking the plunge. Taking a couple of wrist shots seems to help in the process. I did so when I tried on the 18K Omega Planet Ocean (some day) and it's great for future reference. Although completely out of my current budget, I will for 1000% sure get a precious metal watch in the future after adding a few other steel pieces to the collection.

I will take a trip up to Traditional Jewelers on Saturday around 1:00pm and take a few photos. I want you guys to give your opinion, the good the bad and the ugly.

I know you are not a fan of Vegas, but as much as you are thinking of spending on a watch, it's worth a weekend trip. You can hit some many boutiques and other watch stores in two days in that place than anywhere else I know. Plus there are some amazing places to eat.

Right off the bat I can't think of anything bad I could possibly say about that piece. Looking forward to your post though with the wrist shots from in the AD. Although you've established a relationship with them over the years as a customer you should totally consider Roger's suggestion and head to Vegas when you get the time! Anyhow I was closer I would certainly consider this too! Chances are I would end up getting it from the AD I've established that relationship with previously but for comparing watches it never seems to hurt. As far as I'm concerned my flipping days are over so when ever I consider anything from now on I'll put even more thought into it. This stage is all part of the fun too though!

Yeah, when you are looking at spending $30k+ you are in Patek, A Lange & Sohne, Arnold and Son, etc. territory where you get hand craftsmanship rather than pure CNC machining.

That's true, especially considering he already has that lovely 18K Yellow Gold Submariner! A Gold Audemars Piguet piece would be SO tempting for me under those circumstances. Too many choices to list in that price range, indeed. My favourite aspect of the Audemars Piguet pieces would be the 22K Gold rotor (if I'm correct). I know some of those above mentioned brands also have these but wow: From - watchtime.com There's something about Rolex and Omega though that keep me hooked. In some instances I might opt for a watch from them close to that price range. Passing up on hand finishing etc won't be easy though. It's something every watch lover should have at some point of their life I feel.

I left AP off the list because it's an acquired taste but yes AP makes some amazing precious metal pieces. My SS RO has held it's value too. I can sell it today for a $200 more than I paid 2 years ago.
