I was wondering how the logo looks now compared to then. 1964-79 Glashutte GUB cal. 70 (L). 2018 GO Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date (R). So over time the logo has remained similar. GUB was bought by GO around 1993. The logo keeps a link to the heritage. btw poljot24.de (left photo) has a collection of very good to excellent vintage GUBs, serviced, guaranteed, fair price.

Of course the logo does not make the watch. Most of those vintage GUB Glashuttes I stumble across on-line I can't stand. But once in a while you might see one you fancy.

We'll continue a bit. Just happened to surf into this attractive Spezichron on Etsy. The Spezichron succeeded the Spezimatic for GUB Glashutte. And he has a few more interesting models up too. New seller from Prague, Cz. "New old stock Mans East German Glashutte 36mm without winding crown. This watch is brand new. The watch works perfectly and was just oiled at watchmaker." 36mm w/o crown $529.79 MyStorageGoods The watch appears authentic based on a quick comparison. But do your own research if interested. The movement, unmarked in the photos, seems to match the proper unmarked GUB 11-27 on ranfft.de that should be encased in the model. Price is on the high side but we're talking an alternative to current GOs. Hard to imagine, however, if the watch is as presented, any depreciation of value. For the frugal. the subject movement photo by seller GUB 11-27 on ranfft.de

As a rumination. One wonders about the gold plating on these vintage watches. A lot of those cases are actually brass. I wonder sometimes if the brass case itself would be nicer without the plating. I have a vintage Ruhla with brass case that I like a lot. It must have had gold plating originally. So if you find a watch you like with a brass case and poor plating, just remove that plating. Something to ponder.

Glashütte Original was an East German working class watch that normally no one outside of the country cared for. When The Swatch Group bought the brand, they wanted to protect the old legacy and at the same time producing exclusive watches
in the small town of Glashütte, which has old traditions of watchmaking. Today they are the only brand in the town that has Glashütte in the name, which was probably a strategy of The Swatch Group at the time of purchase. To have Glashütte on the
dial then at least 75% are manufactured in-house.

Just to add the interesting note about the hard to find A. Lange & Sohne's Caliber 28 and 28.1 in some early 1950s GUBs. Very collectible and not cheap. Article on hereYes the Hodinkee photo is of a Q1 (Caliber 28) GUB. And some were then stamped with GUB but still made by Lange. 21,000 total pcs. under both stamps. You will see the Q1 GUB but often it has the Caliber 60.3. Big difference.

Now I find it on chrono24 for $4990, Sweden. You just have to be sure it's all original. No substituted parts. Buy the seller they say. Nice stepped case to.
