rw16610 Thanks for all your input! I have to say that during the last couple of days my focus has really shifted! IWC announce their Pilot Chronograph AMG Edition. Not only does it look stunning, but it is affiliated with AMG, a company I have long admired. I did own, at one time, a couple of Mercedes. But never an AMG, too long ago! The real attraction for me is the material titanium, and the use of carbon fiber for the dial. A good size of 43mm, it looks to have a great wrist presence. Silver subdials. I don't normally go for sapphire crystal case backs, but this one just looks so sexy, with the AMG logo and a darkened sapphire crystal. Of course, at 12k in CAD it ain't cheap. But I have long been a fan of the Big Pilot, and could never bring myself to spend $16,500CAD on one. I still believe, although it's a great piece with an amazing 7 day movement, it is over priced. If I felt the value was there, I would likely have bought one already. But that's just my humble opinion, the watch is obviously very successful. But I seem to be drawn more to chronograph watches over the past couple of years. I am just very thankful that the Daytona has never been a favorite of mine! I would likely be dead before I ever got one, and my AD is willing to put me on the list. I feel like IWC has come out with a few great pieces lately. But this one really caught my eye! And I did get to see the new Omega Seamaster 300 with the sandwich type dial the other day. I was disappointed, not in the watch itself, but the fact that it really didn't impress me like I thought it would. Just can't wait to see it in real life! I am very close to selling my FOIS to a friend, so I am getting there with my funds! Damn, that's hot! The Ti case, carbon fiber dial, silver subdials and large subdial hands really go well together. The day/date window and text above/below really balance out the dial as well. I also really like that they kept the AMG designation relegated to the caseback so it doesn't feel like advertising on the wrist.

The supply difficulties with Rolex watches has really shifted my thinking. Back in 2007 - 2016 is was all about Rolex. The fact I have no AD relationship forced me to think outside the box. That ended up being the best thing ever for me. Given the choice of the Explorer or the IWC, I would go for the latter. In fact, I would also take the Zenith over the IWC. Your friend has been very fortunate to get such new watches so well cared for through you! Hopefully this continues when ever you decide to sell. The IWC is incredibly beautiful and very unique. Such an amazing contrast between the carbon fiber dial and silver subdials. Very legible and stands out nicely. Keep all options open and remember, it's about what makes you the happiest and brings the most joy. You're going to find that 2-3 piece combination that does this, with each one refreshing the other. Chronographs are a must! I find them so much better looking sometimes, and most importantly more fun to interact with. Even when I bought my first jewelery store watches in high school (2 Citizen Quartz Chronographs) this was very clear to me. Less is more sometimes, yes. Nothing wrong with a simple dial. In fact, having one in the mix would not be bad. Breitling, Zenith, and IWC would be a tough Chronograph trio to match. If you wish to push it to 4 the Explorer would be ideal! As always, it's a win-win! You normally seem to get bored of Rolex watches fast though. The only exception was the original Explorer you had, which makes this an even harder decision.

Thanks rw16610 I don't think my collection, however, will ever be down to 3 watches. I am actually enjoying most of the watches I now have. Good news! Just sold my FOIS to a very good friend here in Vancouver. Been doing lots of thinking. I believe actually that both the Zenith Shadow and IWC AMG are over priced. The reason I can even consider the Shadow, it is 11k but my AD will give me a good discount so I can get it for 10k tax incl. That is still a lot of money. I will have to go and look at it a few more times. I know I would never get a discount at the IWC Boutique. Nevertheless, would love to see the watch in real life!

carl Congrats on the sale! Happy to hear your collection will remain larger than 3 watches! So now it's bwtween Agreed with that and this sort of narrows it down, contingent upon your in person viewing of the other piece. I'm your shoes I would add the Explorer, to be honest. Agree fully with the pricing on those two models, even with the discount. Any flagship models or popular ones from top brands seem to come in around that range these days. The only issue with getting the Explorer now that the Chronograph complication has taken your interest would be potential boredom. If you were to get tired of a watch and later wish to sell it though, the Explorer is the best one. No matter where you go with your collection the common theme seems to be Rolex calling out to you. It's tough to not have even one in a great collection such as yours. This journey is all part of the fun though, steps forward are typically better.
