I dropped off my date date for service at the Rolex dealer. The lady inspecting my watch told me it's a 1980s and she noticed that the hand winding mechanism was not working but the rotor was spinning, making the watch work. She also noticed that the springbars were not gold they were generic after market.

I had no idea the springbars were real gold. I would have thought that actual gold would have been too soft for such a small part that handles a stress load?

Same, I didn't realize they could make those out of gold. With the solid end links leaving hardly any space around them it can act as additional support, I guess, preventing movement.
You've had that watch for a very long time, when you post pictures it takes me back to the TKF days.
Hope you have the watch bask soon, Art!

fourthirds - I would figure around that much or just a bit more might be safe to expect. For this watch and how long you've had it, it's definitely worth getting this stuff done. However, doesn't make it less painful sometimes. With the estimate you likely won't have to go ahead with every single item (maybe), but I would do it. This is why I'm not a fan of the two-tone Omega chronograph watches from the Seamaster line. The helium escape valve, crown, and two chronograph pushers are 18K gold and contributes to something similar on top of a $1,000 CAD ish basic service. Can't recall if the rate for those includes the gold parts, but last I checked with Omega they said it varies for that reason and with the price of gold, etc. Again, that watch of yours is totally worth doing this for!

I’m guessing it’ll be closer to $1400-$1500 when they add in the crystal and springbars. Looking forward to seeing it when you get it back.

I have never seen gold spring bars. I would have thought they’d deform and become insecure quite quickly. Did a little research and it seems they use 18ct. Here’s a pair for older models with lug holes

Is there a particular reason you want to use Rolex to service the watch? If you don't need the service verification, why not save $1000+ and have a good indy watchmaker do the service?

I wanted some people work showing it's an original Rolex. I purchased it about 10 years ago from a family jeweler, but he didn't have any paperwork he did have its service before he gave it to me.

Years ago Rolex Canada did authenticity checks which worked great in situations like these where all the owner wants is some official documentation from the brand. However, they've since stopped doing it which was confirmed by them last year.
Sadly you'll have to bite the bullet and go to the RSC so you'll have all of that. Given the circumstances it'll be worth doing this time around. In the distant future for the next service - independent watchmaker all the way.

It's worth it to me, even though I seldom use it. I still call it the Tony Soprano watch.
