The following statement was posted on the Oysterquartz forum. I cannot confirm its accuracy, other than to say the 5335 and 5355 movements are real and were released in prototype form sometime around 2000. If the statement is true, the time frame mentioned would be about right for a debut at the Basel fair in the Spring of 2006. Let's keep our fingers crossed. A long term friend of mine, who works for Rolex, confirmed to me that the new quartz calibers 5335 & 5355 are ready to be launched. All service centers around the world have been given the services manuals and technicians are receiving training seminars on how to repair/service the above mentioned calibers. According to my friend, after this, it usually takes 6 months to 1 year max. for the product to reach the market. What Rolex has not announced yet is the case which will house the new calibers. For more information about the 5335 and 5355 movements go to www.oysterquartz.net/the_oysterquartz_pc.htm.

Hmm... why would you guys buy a quartz Rolex? I understand the value of the old Oysterquarz among the collectors... but I would feel a bit strange with a Rolex that ticks like those Chinese fakes. ;D

Well, I'm not sure I would equate a new qysterquartz movement to a "Chinese fake". I would rather imagine Rolex would insure that the movement would meet COSC specs. for quartz which as I understand is about .07sec. a day. Not to shabby. The oysterquartz was generally considered to be one of the better quartz movements available. Omega and Breitling have some pretty fair quartz movements out there, and a lot of people love them. Rolex would be filling a niche that is currently unoccupied in their line. I think there are a substantial number of people that value the accuracy that a quality quartz movement provides. Certainly ther are those that want the quality and recognition that Rolex brings to the table. Add a super accurate movement and I think you have a winner.

Good answer Mike. For some people the accuracy really is an issue. I never really cared... I minute here and there... perhaps that's the artist in me... but I usually catch my plane just ok. I used to own a Citizen quartz which was deadly accurate. Something like +/- 1 seconds per month. That baby is still ticking, those old Japanese quartz watches are robust and reliable.

I have a suspicion (more like a hunch) that the new Oysterquartz will have a sweeping second hand. This isn't based on anything I know, so trust me when I say it is only a hunch. It could be done by having a stepper motor that pulses 8 times a second rather than once per second. The second hand on such a watch would move around the dial just as smoothly as that of a 3135 powered Datejust running at 28,800 bph.
(Keep in mind that Rolex's first quartz watch, the 5100 Quartz Date, which shared the Beta 21 movement with other Swiss brands, had a sweeping second hand.)

Hey Gary, Any thoughts on the case and bracelet?

But if it's 8 ticks per second then it wears out the battery 8 times faster. Right?
