Wow....Genuine Rolex dial & bracelet? That must have been an expensive fake! Check out this eBay auction for a Rolex hologram. Crazy, eh?

In this situation, the case was fake, too. The S/N was completely wrong for the watch.

Interesting story Clifton. Those types of people are the worst to me, they are trying so hard to be and show something they are not and don't have. What a horses arse!! To me, a fake is a fake. That not only applies to the watch they are wearing. I would guess that part of the Rolex stigma comes from people that are not even wearing real Rolex watches.

Hey Pat, That was a great story....but what on earth made you forego a new Sub-date over a Railmaster. Come on, I mean, a Railmaster is a very nice watch and all that, but I can assure you that 99% of us here would have opted for the new Sub. Just my thoughts, that's all!! Cheers - JJ

Our fiirst direct communication! And not the first time I've been asked the question. Most often, folks just come out and say, "Are you INSANE?' There really was method to my madness. First, I already own a Rolex - a 1981 Air King which I bought new from Corrigan's Jewelers in Tyler, Texas. Second, and probably most importantly, I'm a big rail fan, and respect the heritage of the Railmaster - and other railroad grade watches such as the Ball Trainmaster, etc., and I had already decided to acquire one when the opportunity arose. Third - the GM region I'm in sponsors a Rolex challenge every year, and I figure I'll win one of those eventually. I know it's hard to understand someone choosing an Omega over a Rolex, but it really does happen.

Why not a Railmaster over Rollie? That's such a great watch... About the fakes... I saw a fake Sub on one of my business associates. How did I spot it? Because it ticked. ;D This is the older guy and very nice fellow... I wouldn't ask him because it might cause unnecessary embarrassment... or perhaps the guy just doesn't really care what watch he's wearing and just like the Sub design... isn't that what Invicta, Sandoz and Marcello do? Rip off the Rolex design... Yes they change the dial text but it's almost the same thing... I also saw a green TT Sub (yes green!!!) on a some yuppie kid a few months ago... in a local nightclub... that guy was a poser... I was going to say something like "Nice Chinese Sub you have" but decided against it... perhaps the kid enjoys his fake and eventually buys a real watch... I don't know about the "high end fakes"... never seen them in Europe. Everything I've seen have been just laughable junk... tourists always buy "gold" Rolexes from their Taiwan & Hong Kong trips... Still... wearing a genuine, expensive watch doesn't make anyone a greater person... just imho. This is sickness.

I know it's hard to understand someone choosing an Omega over a Rolex, but it really does happen. Well JJ.... there are plenty of folks that would pick Omega over Rolex! I bought four Omegas over the past few years, with a total MSRP of over 10k. I also bought a Daytona just a few months ago and it did not impress me a bit. (True... I bought it for somebody else, but if I would have loved it I might have kept it.) And.... we all know that the real, true WIS would pick neither Omega or Rolex. They deal with Vacheron, Patek, UN, Glashutte etc and they could not care less about resale value. ;D

I have to beg to differ that a "true WIS" would not pick either Omega or Rolex. I know for a fact that some of the most knowledgable horologist out there own both brands and swear by them.
Now they don't think they are the mutts nutts like so many people do, but they pick them because they do know what they are, solid and reliable.

Based on my experiences Omegas are very much respected and liked among true WIS.
For some strange reason WIS people seem to look Rolex down their noses. Probably not the watch... who can deny the history and traditions... but people who wear them.
Brands like Omega or Zenith never cause that kind of reaction.
