It was named the Megaquartz because the quartz crystal, rather than operating at the typical 32KHz, ran at 2.4MHz. The Omega Megaquartz watches with the 1516 movements that were certified as Marine Chronometers by the Nuchatel Observatory in Switzerland are without doubt the most accurate wrist watches ever made. In the course of the 63 day test for Marine Chronometer certification the two watches that were tested showed an average variation of 0.002 seconds and 0.003 seconds per day respectively. That translates to a variance of <1 sec per year. (The remainder of the Megaquartz models that were certified as Marine Chronometers were tested at the Bescanon Observatory in France.) And unlike what Rolex did with their famous Kew Observatory Chronometers from the 40s and 50s, where the movements were purpose built to be submitted for certification, Omega claims the two watches certified by Nuchatel were standard production pieces.
