Ok, when will it stop, when do the collectors and vintage enthusiasts say enough is enough and refuse to pay crazy prices for vintage? I love vintage, ok, so I'm the first person who understands the reasoning behind the ridiculous prices people are willing to pay, but we're no longer just focusing on Rolex, these prices have skyrocketed across the board, Rolex, Tudor, Omega, Zenith, and now even other more obscure brands are starting to see a rise in prices, but mostly in their sports model lineup. What makes a stainless steel case on a vintage Submariner alone worth close to 3 grand and a Datejust can be had for a few hundred? Red paint on a dial makes a 1680 worth twice as much as a white 1680? What is my 5513 going to be worth in 10 years, 12 grand? Why? Nobody wanted the Daytona when it was released and was priced stupid cheap and nobody wanted them. I get it, they're iconic, big deal, buy are they worth the price of my first house? Let's not even begin to talk about military pieces. Stop the madness!

Supply and demand.
Collectors drive the market and with recent interest rising in vintage Rolex models from China and elsewhere the market is heading north.....as it has done for 20 years. Top end pieces are going for insane prices but a decent feet first red sub is just a tad more than it was 5 years ago. Another thing to consider is that when the modern models get a price increase - vintage prices jump also.
Old crap?
hardly.

I think the problem is Steve, the prices for a "new" Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Breitling etc is the prices are going up so fast it's bringing the second hand/ vintage prices up. Now if you want to own a Rolex say for under £4k its got to be a older model.

I love looking at all the watches I cannot afford.
I am 30 years old, These watches have always been expensive for me to buy in the past 10 years I have been buying watches.
Some of you guys had the chance to get Mil Subs for $3000.00 and Red Subs for $800.00

Pete said it, people will pay for what they want, and if what they want is harder to find than the shed-loads of new ones on every main shopping street in every big city, then the price will reflect that. Crazy? Maybe, but it's the same with everything else; major/popular brand = expensive, even new, and exorbitant if rare and vintage. People pay thousands for old sticky squares of paper which you lick and smack onto an envelope... (and they were literally 'a penny' when issued).

You're right Pete. A given price for a new or vintage piece might not be acceptable by everyone, but the few that are willing to pay that are the ones who spoil it up for everyone else.

Unfortunately, there will always be vintage pieces that we want, that are out of our respective price ranges. I'm just happy that I can own a few high end pieces, and pursue my hobby by collecting affordables, as well. It doesn't have to be A Rolex for me, though the vintage brands that I do own are Rolex and Omega. It is what it is. No sense worrying about it. It makes the hunt more challenging, thus more enjoyable.....for me.

I've been eyeing the vintage blue Tudor subs lately. Is live to find the right one. Most have replacement bands, no band, and / or new bezel inserts and is rather pay for original rather than a pieced together one.

What Pete and Karl said. One of my favorite sayings is the world works the way it does, not necessarily the way we think it should. It's a crazy world for sure, especially the vintage world and the collecting worlds in general. Collectors are crazy anyway!

I guess the best way to explore the difference between the two is to get them checked via an expert..that'd be a great idea.
