Interesting watch.
Never heard of that dealer before. If the watch is genuine it's a rare bird. A couple of observations...,
The bracelet looks non original, the way it connects to the lugs is very sloppy.
The so called platinum case has an unusual finish.
I'm unfamiliar with any vintage platinum cases.
"Mint" dials from the 50's are super rare. Almost an oxymoron.
We definitely need some more info to tick this one off.
Thanks for sharing it Chip.

I reckon it might be a genuine thing, especially after watching an Hodinkee video about an Italian collector. At one point he shows a beautiful white gold Rolex Daytona on his wrist with a beautiful bracelet not too dissimilar to this in that is has tiny links and is smoother more dressy finished, here is the video, worth watching even if not for the Rolex! The watch comes in at 4:30.
Oh, and i will try to find it but I have seen that pattern on a Rolex dial before, but in white, it is genuine!

Found it! On another Hodinkee video, this time a luxury antique store in italy. At 2:30 you will see the watch in question. This one though is on a jubilee and is white gold so it shows Rolex did some unusual finishes and customized watches for clients back in the day.

Thanks Joe, I discovered them a few months ago with their John Mayer one. I watched an interview with the guy who came up with the website and he is a real enthusiast, not just into flash or highly collectable watches but anything that is interesting.

ianmediu great video, indeed I love watching videos like those. Some excellent watches shown that are historically significant. I'll have to look it up but one day in a waiting room while reading a magazine I saw an article on an Italian collector and it may have been that same gentleman from the first video.

No worries RW, I am loving them, they seem to interview really interesting collectors with some beautiful watches. They ask really great questions as well.

Can't disagree with that. They do ask some very good questions to make the segment even more educational. This is what the hobby is all about and I ended up watching the first video a second time now. This guy must be the life of any watch get together's he attends

I would love to meet him, such a down to earth attitude. I loved it when he wiped his cheese knife on his jacket sleeve and opened the case backs!

Haha yeah, I liked that part as well. It's so cool with those watches how you can so easily open them up to admire the movements. Not practical for normal use obviously but I'm sure he has enough watches where some are more suited for swimming if need be.
Also, it was only a few years ago where I discovered that some flea markets in Europe and other places in the world were NOTHING like the junk in North America. A member from Europe posted so many pictures of authentic Rolex items found at those markets. That $800.00 watch he mentions in the video will be a blue chip investment as with the rest of his watches.
The funny thing is, the joy we have as watch lovers owning these things is worth it all in itself. Factor in the possibility of future value increase and it's another reason on the long list as to why it's among the best hobbies out there in my eyes.

You know, that was something i was thinking about. I am from the UK originally and remember seeing things like Rolex and other Swiss watches, older ones 1950's/60's 70's going for next to no money. I remember seeing a datejust once in a second hand store in Exeter back at the end of the eighties, a TT one and i think it was £400 back then and it was in good order, no stretched band, nice and shiny and all working as it should, even had the box. Things that were older were even cheaper, a tired old sub I remember seeing once in London for £250! That tired old sub now would probably be the thick end of $20'000 in the condition I saw it in.
I think the internet has done it, that and ebay. I remember back in 2002 when I was staying in Scotland for an extended period purchasing from eBay in Germany an immaculate bumper omega from the late 40's for £80's now, in that original condition it would probably be nearer £500 looking on ebay, once it got around the net really pushed the prices up!

That's a shame in many ways how an expanded market helped drive prices skyward. This could also be seen with the vintage Submariner anchors, some of which sold for around $1,200.00 USD many years back at auction there. No need for local sales now that the world is "flat" thanks to technology.
Having seen the price evolution chart at minus4plus6.com it's incredible how watches that retailed for $300.00 or less several decades ago are in the price range you point out for the Submariner and higher.
Even items from about 2004 onward have increased significantly. Back in 2007 a brand new 16610 was $5,750.00 CAD taxes included with that 20+% off. Now, you can't get a used one for that price and new it's more like $8,000.00+. Noticing this was one of the many factors that got me into collecting Rolex accessories.
Could you imagine owning 1 of 3 watches ever made like John from the video? Modern Rolexes can't match that but the lucky ones who got their hands on the Comex 16600 Sea-Dweller's will be laughing. How cool would it be to sit and look at those watches.

I don't have a knowledge about vintage wrist watches. But i have never seen this type of Rolex watch. Specially the bracelet connecting to watch, it looks like a custom bracelet.

Not sure, but i have never seen this type of Rolex bracelet, watch might be original but bracelet seems to be custom. To know whether watch is original or not, visit the genuine watch store.
