In defence of Rolex's use of 904L steel. There is an excellent, short article here: beckertime.com/blog/2012/what-is-the-big-deal-of-rolexs-use-of-904l-steel/Of course, in use for all Rolex stainless steel watches now, and bracelets, not only diver watches. Having heard so many arguments for and against, and also about why does Rolex not provide AR coating on it's sapphire crystals, or exhibition casebacks, or engraving on the caseback. For me, the appeal is that less is better, and that they are consistent in maintaining this philosophy. I think that I should start compiling a list of why I want to own a Rolex, over other watches Cheers, Carl Very good reasoning there, Carl. Over the years I have gradually discovered that less is in fact more as they say. Especially when it comes to a watch that most people will typically hang onto for their entire lives. I guess it's mostly the WIS community that "flips" them every so often. The whole point of a top quality Swiss watch is to spend A LOT of money ONCE and be set, for life essentially. As neat as engravings on the back can be and all of that jazz, we do change a lot over the years and simple, timeless aspects seem to stand the test of time with us better than things that can more less be a phase or easily tiresome. To me, the sapphire crystals without the coating adds a nice classic appeal to the watch. The glare can add a nice smokey / pearly touch to the watch face. I guess it's the same way Rolex continued to make their crystals stick up like the old "top hat" style ones, just much less. Most other brands have it flush with the fixed or rotating bezel. Dont know about that. It was a G-series, sold from EU AD Oktober 2012. Cromalight and parachrom. Yeah, I wasn't too sure myself as I read some stuff on a larger forum where there were many reports of similar issues. That's awesome because I thought the GMT had just the regular SuperLuminova material on the hour markers. So it was the same green lume or it appeared blue like the Submariner? Appeared blue . . .though the iPhone 4S ( my phone then )was bad to show it here Loved that watch. So sad about that date-issue

Oh my goodness, what a shame it was for sure. The more I see this watch the more certain I am it must be my next one! Amazing pictures of it. The thing is though, unless it's the GMT with a multi coloured bezel it would be rather similar to the Submariner. In fact, I have heard that the only difference now between the two other than the obvious clasp, dial etc is the fact the caseback is thicker on the Submariner. The crystal is the same and they both have the triplock crown now.

Therefore only 100M rating - as the crown is the same. The case is not exactly the same - I think the GMTIIc case looks a little bit better to me, as the lugs are slightly smaller . . . just better proportions.

That makes perfect sense. Regarding the GMT, you're right I think. The watch is so well balanced, this is why I feel it's my ideal daily wear piece. MAN oh man, after looking at your pictures it made me consider selling the Explorer II for a second... Just for a second though The funny thing is if I did sell this watch locally now I could actually sell it for a bit more than what I paid in 2010. Not to mention if I was somehow willing to sell my Rolex accessories I could have that GMT in a matter of months if the summer treats me well. But then I would be a one watch man with no older style piece to represent the vintage era of folded clasps etc. I guess the new GMT's wont be going anywhere for a while so it's alright to wait it out and continue to hoard Rolex watches and accessories

It seems to go easy for most woman I too is on a hunt ( not asap ) . . . the Hulk !. I want to wait, but my concern is, that the last Rolex price increase was in 2012 - so it might be due soon :/

I know, when ever I pick out anything expensive it takes A LOT of planning and thought. Even for stuff like a designer wallet, I go around and compare all of them for a while. I try not to have any regrets but sadly there's a few and the less of those for me the better! That new LV is amazing! The green gold dial... It will fit nicely into your collection when you do get it. Sometimes I look at how easy it would be to buy that NEW from the AD Rolex if I was willing to sell the Explorer II. I could have had it already! But my logic is, I'll NEVER, EVER get a discontinued Rolex for the price I paid ever again. Not to mention the watches that were less popular seemed to have a good following after by collectors. Rolex price increases certainly stress urgency. Although it drives up the preowned prices as well it makes it tougher to not flip a watch and get the one you want. There's no doubt in my mind that after getting that GMT it will be the only watch I wear until it goes in for a service. Once it comes back, it will again be the only watch I wear. I'm not big on rotating watches so get things that can do it all and look good in all settings.
