I have always had a thing for the oversized seventies gold plated Electronic Timex's. I remember seeing one once with a GMT feature but they were only made for a few years apparently so not that many about. Looking on eBay tonight I see a vintage watch seller in Canada with what looks like a pristine condition one and the exact model I have wanted for so long! A steal of a buy it now price, comes with a new battery and NOS burgundy strap which I think suites it perfectly. So two Timex's on their way to me. So excited about a vintage Timex, been waiting for this one for so long! The nice thing is this was made around the same time I got my first watch, a Timex! Here are some pictures from the seller, more to come! And this is a video of how they look working! A lot of watch for $40!

Nice. I remember those. Love the cool cushion case. I'm not usually a fan of that shape, but it totally works on the watch.

Thanks Guys! One of the things I love about these lower end vintages is that there is usually a very enthusiastic following behind them. There is a huge one behind the Timex Electrics, so much so I have found out the setting instructions, downloaded a PDF of both the original manual and service instructions!
I think another thing for me, is that I seem to have more fun with the cheaper end, not so much pressure on expectation from an expensive purchase I think if that makes sense.

That's pretty cool Ian, sometimes you don't need thousands of dollars to find a fun watch, enjoy.

Ah the memories! Timex was the first watch brand that got me into this as a kid. They don't make them like they used to, the vintage ones are quite nice. Your collection continues to grown, how amazing! Congratulations, Ian By the way, I love the music in the video. I've been getting even deeper into classical music lately. It seems to bring out the best of me, I'm all for the Mozart effect regardless to what anyone says

Very cool, Ian. My first watch, as a girl, was also a Timex. I remember thinking how special it was. A young Wis in the making. Who knew?...

Cheers Steve, Rommel, Classical music is my first love. If you looked at my collection 85% is classical. Heck I have two complete Wagner ring cycles to show you how nuts I am about it!
Kat, I think so many of us started with Timex. I just had to have one from the time when I got my first watch!

My first Timex was in the 3rd grade. I saw the watch in a retailers catalog and fell in love with it. I wanted it SO bad, asked my parents for it. Back then it had the same effect on me that Rolex has today! My parents finally caved and got me one like this: From - pmwf.com That watch went everywhere I did. Being so young my parents did not want me to wear it to school, so I had to keep it hidden in the mornings! They figured as much and were not mad when they found out. One morning my mom asked me what time it was and I so stupidly looked at my wrist and told her A bit later down she got me my first love: This was the one I wanted originally but it was sold out, EVERYWHERE back in the early - mid 1990's Finally I was able to get one and was VERY happy with it ;-|Playing with the Indiglo was so neat in the dark. I later got into Casio watches (G-Shocks) after Timex changed the design. So like with you and Kat (and many others, I'm sure) Timex watches started it all for me. Many years and thousands of dollars later, here I am! I'll always have fond memories of this brand and if I ever have kids I'll start them out the same way, if they wish. Classical Music... I regret not getting into it earlier in life but all happens for a reason. To actually feel the music, connect to it and appreciate every nuance is a way to appreciate what I feel is the finest art form that influenced a lot of the other things we enjoy, like watches. I'll listen to various movements of different symphonies by Beehtoven, Mozart, Antonio Vivaldi, Carl Orff, Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonín Dvořák and be amazed by what they created and achieved in history. It just goes hand in hand with fine timepieces and I bet the watchmakers who designed and built your pocket watches had a passion for it too! As a kid when I had that second Timex we had a school trip to Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto, where the symphony orchestra performs. Here is an image of that place from Wikipedia: Check out the Rolex ad there! It's all connected!

Rommel. I love your Timex story. As you say i think a great many of us started off with the brand and it could be argued they have done more for watchmaking than any other brand. I read something once from a watch maker that said anyone can make a watch and charge for it but to make a watch down to a budget and make it reliable and long lasting is a very difficult thing. Looking on eBay I think Timex got the formula right as there are thousands of 40 0r 50 year old Timex's keeping great time and looking good and when you think to sell them for what they did the movements must have cost pennies it says an awful lot for the attention to design they put into them!
As for music, you have excellent taste. I was lucky and grew up listening to it from an early age. I think for me there is a purity to it that rock/pop/Jazz do not have. Thats not saying I don't listen to those genres, I do but when I want to gain peace and feel completely absorbed by the music so that the day disappear classical is the only genre that takes me somewhere other than here!
I can't see anything in the link you posted unfortunately, it just comes up black.
A form of classical you might enjoy is early music using instruments from that era.
Have a listen to this and see what you think!
The bass string notes just seem to vibrate inside!

I can't see anything in the link you posted unfortunately, it just comes up black. A form of classical you might enjoy is early music using instruments from that era. Have a listen to this and see what you think! The bass string notes just seem to vibrate inside! I remember my grandmother had a cool Automatic one when I was 6 or 7 years old. I was fascinated by the way the second hand sweeped around the dial, as I only ever saw the tick motion of quartz watches at that stage of my life. Being able to build reliable watches to last for that price range is incredible. It's a true sign of a different era, a time where these were necessities before the quartz boom and other devices like smartphones and smartwatches. A day when everyone needed reliable watches, regardless to the budget. Back then the watches most of us love cost anywhere from $100 - $300 or so, and that's for a brand new Rolex Submariner, GMT and other brand of watches at the time! We all should thank them for being a gateway to out most valued interest. Thanks, as I started to get into this it was easier to find symphonies / different movements from the most popular throughout history. This site was a big help: www.kickassclassical.com/classical-music-popular-famous-best-top-100-list.htmlThe music certainly does take you on a journey! I too appreciate various genre's but none had had the same effect on me. When ever my concentration or focus is needed I'll listen to it but lately as my exposure increased it's becoming regular. Before this I had no idea what the Mozart effect was and that people actually invested in scientific studies regarding this very topic. The music has a way of making me feel more intelligent, relaxed, focused and appreciative. True or not, the human mind is a weird thing. If we feel something and believe it, this then becomes reality. Sort of like the placebo effect in medicine. All I know is, it works for me and I'm enjoying the exploration of this golden era of real music. That was a lovely piece you posted there. The notes they play always leave me in awe of what creative geniuses these composers were. The way they were able to express various concepts and emotions through their creations. The best example of this that comes to mind is Vivaldi, The Four Seasons. One of my favourites and it really speaks to me. Hopefully it works this time around, it's a great picture of Roy Thompson Hall with the CN Tower in the background. Also, there is a Rolex ad on the information screen out front of it:

Cheers Carl, yeah, the great thing with this end of the price spectrum is the amounts are small so I find there is less pressure and I can have more fun and a diverse range of watches into the bargain! Must admit they have a couple of diver style ones on the bay I feel very tempted by, one even has the original faux leather strap with embossed grain that looks stunning, here is a picture!
