Same here Steve, if its not right its not right. The feet first Red sub is an all time classic and I can see what you mean about the shape of the non crown guard one you had.
Hopefully this will not take too long to get to you. Congratulations on acquiring one of the most collectable watches in the world!

For a red Submariner anything's a good trade it seems! I would take one of those in a heartbeat!

Thanks guys, I feel really bad, I wanted this watch in such a bad way and then it wasn't like I expected. I like the heft of a Sub on my wrist and the 5508 just doesn't have that heft. So I decided to go for my other grail Sub–within budget. Updates and unveiling to come shortly. king780 would be proud!

If it ain't right, it ain't right. Better to wear it and be happy then to always be wishing for something else. You made the right choice.

To be honest, I actually like this one better! You have to do what you feel comfortable with. An honest man is one who doesn't fool himself. I had to make a recent decision like that myself. You can love a watch like that Rolex, but just not like it for yourself. The only judgment I make here, is that you did the right thing! Cheers Carl

Cheers Carl Thanks for the kind words Carl, yes, I have always admired Red Subs from afar and always wanted one, but that said, I did the same with 5508s and 5510s since I couldn't afford a BC, I decided to go for the 5508. I was thinking this watch would have been just like any other Submariner, but it isn't. Everything about this Sub is different, size, weight, shape, bezel, etc. I would love to have this watch in addition to another Sub but it's just too expensive for me to keep as a second watch. If you like the feel of the older DJs then you would feel right at home wearing one of these, I'm just into 40mm watches. And what I love about this one is it came from the original owner with documentation and the MK1 kissing 4 fat font is simply to die for.

That really is a beautiful watch Steve and as you and I have discussed before a greater part of the story of vintage watches is not only the watch itself but the provenance and this one as a one owner with documentation is wonderful as you are only the second person to own it from new! That gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
I have a feeling the emotional connection that is so important with vintage is going to be huge with this one!
Are you going to try to source an original pearl or leave it. For me it would not matter and knowing this is a one owner I would not want to swap the bezel

Thanks Ian, I'm going to leave it exactly like it is. Definitely the bezel insert stays, it's a beauty and these MK1 inserts are as rare as hen's teeth. I like the sans pearl look, so that will remain as is too. The original owner had the bracelet replaced in the late 70s with this USA rivet, so that will remain on the watch since as far as I'm concerned it's original to the watch. Did you know the darker Tritium dials mean the watch was stored or kept indoors most of its life? The lighter dials have actually been exposed to more sun and hence have gotten whiter. It even has the original crown! The only thing changed on this watch has been the plexi, it was replaced at RSC San Francisco and pressure tested.

I had no idea about the tritium, fascinating. As for the crystal, to me things like that are service items to keep the integrity of the water resistance of the watch so I reckon thats fine as it shows the watch is still capable of what it was intended for. I am with you on the bezel, leave well alone, its in great condition as well.
Same with the bracelet, its a period piece. Again, with vintage things like straps back in those days if worn would simply be replaced and if the owner did not want to go to the expense then they would put it on leather or NATO. Back in those days a watch was still first and foremost a practical needed thing unlike now where they tend to be either for enthusiasts like us or people who still like to tell the time with a watch
For me what this watch has like the dial, movement and original case are what are the important things. The watch has its original integrity. Its why I would rather have the original dial with patina than a new replacement, same with hands.

I like it. I don't know a lot about vintage subs, but I do know the red script one is coveted by collectors. It's a real beauty, Steve. Wear it in good health. If it were mine, I would source a pearl, but I'm obsessive about stuff like that.
