Ok I'm after a half decent alarm clock with radio for the bedroom. Previously I've had an iPod deck but the backlit display drove me crazy.. it lit up the room and I cant sleep like that. This now lives downstairs and is used as the main radio/ipod player in the kitchen.. so it didnt go to waste! Soo I'm wanting something that doesnt glow like a torch, has decent sound quality and doesnt cost a bomb like the bose wave does. here's what I'm contemplating so far, if you have any real life experience with either of these models or you have another suggestion please do share 1. Tivoli Model Three - www.tivoliaudio.com.au/M3.htmlI love the retro look and the classy appearance of the wood, however, they say the clock glows.. not sure how much it glows. 2. Boston Acoustics Receptor www.bostonacoustics.com/home_product.aspx?category_id=34&product_id=213This one has good features, they market the fact you can control how bright the clock shines, its not backlit.. but the unit itself isn't as 'sexy' as the Tivoli is it?? now I'm gonna buy it off ebay as I can save like 60% off the RRP...

I saw the BA unit in the paper advertised this weekend. They want $200 for it. Looks nice but that's a lot of coin for an alarm clock.
Then again, if it was a mechanical JLC desktop one, I wouldn't blink an eye on buying it. LOL

Yeh its alot of coin, however, I think you are buying alot more than just an alarm clock.. the quality of components and sound make it far more... my new house floorplan is as such that it'll be heard in the study/bathroom and upstairs area... so I'm not worried about spending a few hundred.. heck a strap costs more than these do and we dont fuss about that!

Amanda, I have the Boston Acoustics. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!! The Tivoli looks and sounds great, and it's the one I initially was going to buy, but it has a lousy alarm feature. The BA sounds just as nice, but the dual alarm is far more functional and is easier to use. I paid $150 US for mine so I'd think that you can do better on the price - especially with the holidays coming. It seems that alarm clocks are either $20 or $150. Not much in between. After going through about 4 of the cheapies I decided on the Boston Acoustics. I don't regret spending the money at all. I've even found myself listening to the radio more before going to sleep (it turns itself off) or on the weekend mornings it's fun to lie in bed and listen to NPR or BBC. -Ben

I bought an alarm clock from RadioShack in late 1994 for 9 dollars and 99 cents, and it still works and wakes me up in the morning. So I'm afraid I can't help you there. I got one of those rat shack clocks sitting on top of a Tivoli Model One, the best of both worlds. ;D

It also has a dimmer feature. As I mentioned, it is dual alarm. Each alarm can be set to the radio, alarm or both. The snooze button goes from 10 to 30 minutes depending on how many times you hit it. This is great for me as I have a hard time waking up and I have to have it start going off at least 30 minutes before I actually get out of bed. The radio has something like 20 station presets and you can have it turn off automatically anywhere from 10 to 60 minutes. Ah...and it sounds very nice. As I mentioned, it's not cheap for an alarm clock, but I think it's been worth every penny. -Ben

I use a boom box or the desktop for a radio in my bedroom (mostly talk radio).
For an alarm I have swtiched to using my cellphone. I had to use it while on a trip up to Washington St to see family. I found that it had a pleasant ringer and woke me right up.
With a clock radio/alarm, I have always had to set it 30 mins in advance, and I hit the freakin sleep button too too too many times.
don't know if this helps in anyway...jus ramblin.....

Here is my set up... One 80 gig iPod connected to a stereo system/surround sound. Goes off at 6:20 and it is VERY loud. Hit the remote and mute it by 6:20:05 One RadioShack alarm clock (no radio). Goes off at 6:22 AM. I hit snooze at 6:22:05 One BlackBerry 8800 Indigo. Goes off at 6:25 AM. I hit snooze at 6:25:05. One BlackBerry 8100 Pearl. Starts annoying me around 6:27. You guessed it... I snooze it ASAP. One iPhone, with multiple alarms, set 2 minutes apart. They start going off at 6:30. I snooze it right away. Now repeat procedure (minus the iPod through the stereo, which provides the initial "jolt".). Around 7:25 or so I get out of bed, I have a Red Bull. Something like that. Works like a charm.

Jeepers you must be a very irritating 'bed buddy' all those alarms to get up! What time would you wake up Chip, if you didn't use an alarm? ;D

If I were you I would set the alarm for 7:25 and just sleep for that hour and five minutes instead of being woken up over and over again. I'm no morning person, so being woken up once is all I can take.......
