Today was full of surprises. I had breakfast with a couple of friends, and mentioned that I was going to look at Grand Seiko watches. When I told my buddy where it was, he reminded me of a visit there a few months ago, when we went in to look at a line of mens' rings that the jeweller has. Neither of us bought a ring, but I ended up spending an hour or so talking with the sales associate - a young and very personable guy, also a WIS - about various watches. I found his card, and away I went to look at the Grand Seiko.
He was delighted to show me all the models they had, and in fact to have someone to talk with who was even aware of the brand. I told him I was there for the quartz model, SBGX061. I tried on quite a few, with black dial, champagne dial, then the white dial. Well, when he took the plastic coating off the watch that did it for me! The only white dial watch I ever really liked is the Rolex Explorer II. But this polar white dial really did the trick. I couldn't go with the black after trying it, although it's a beautiful ink black. And the champagne dial, as beautiful as it is, just looked lost on my wrist.
I could hardly sleep last night after I discovered the small quartz model. It reminds me of my Explorer I, only it's a lot nicer. The finishing is exceptional in every aspect. The second hand hits each and every marker bang on, even better than my Z-33. The sword hands are beautiful, crisp and sharp, even the second hand has beautiful detail. The date window is done beautifully. The whole watch is so beautiful in it's simplicity. The icing on the cake is the fantastic 9F62 HEQ movement, accurate to within +-10 secs/year. And it is thermocompensated.
Specifications:

Believe me, the Grand Seiko models make no compromises. They all have to be seen to be believed. I was very pleasantly surprised with the service I receieved at the AD, I almost felt as though I was dealing with someone from the Omega Boutique. We must have talked about watches for a couple of hours. He was wearing a Calibre de Cartier, so we had quite a discussion about Cartier watches. I did not expect nor mention a discount but a very fair offer was made. I did the quick math, and with the Canadian dollar devalued as it is, I could not have done better.
That's all for now. I also realized on my way home that the GS is the least amount I have spent on a watch since I got my Breitiling Colt SuperOcean in 1997!
Cheers,
Carl
