Heading downtown today. I have tried my Speedy with the nylon NATO that it comes with in the package. But I am really craving either a leather NATO or a rich looking darker leather strap. Here are some pics I took a while ago, with the Omega Barenia Leather NATO:
Really in a conundrum lately. Maybe next year, a new watch, but after years of buying/flipping I am really not sure. The only thing that I am sure of, is that the Speedy is still may favourite. I just cannot deny that, and maybe I am better off getting a couple of leather straps for it than buying a new watch. To be honest, the only one that really interests me is the new Globemaster, and I have yet to see a real one (only had the carnet models so far at the Boutique). I want to be absolutely certain that it is going to get lots and lots of wear. I love my Grand Seiko quartz with the white dial, every day watch for work, and at the weekends can't wait to wear the Speedy. Still my all-time favourite - even including all of the DSM and GSM models - with the hesalite and manually wound movement.
Anyway, maybe some pics to come with new shoes for the Speedy!
Cheers, Carl

Omega offers some great strap options, if you don't get this one I'm sure they have several others that suit this classic piece. I can't recall ever seeing a leather NATO before either.

Straps can really change the look of a watch tremendously and make it feel like a different watch altogether. Will the black/grey NATO that they have on the Spector watch fit the Speedy? If so, that might be a great look to try out.

You should try to get the NASA strap like I had.

Looks great on the NATO Carl. The Speedy is a favourite of mine. Flipping is a disease that I've beaten. It can be done! Chasing perfection on vintage watches is fraught with danger I'm afraid.
That Speedy is a keep my friend.

Well, in the end, the brown calf leather strap with Omega Deployant won out, as I thought it would. Turns out, I really am not a NATO strap guy, although there are plenty of wonderful straps from which to choose. This one gives the watch a totally different look, a lot of the look is borrowed from the FOIS with the darker brown leather strap. Also a great look. I just knew that for my Speedy, I had to go with a genuine Omega strap and buckle/deployant clasp. That is the only thing that would make me happy. These are a couple pics taken tonight, more to follow:

carl That looks fantastic. As you say it gives it the FOIS look. Can't wait to see more photos. I always thought mine would live on its bracelet forever. Now....

That does give it the FOIS look. Nicely played sir, nicely played! Another option to consider IMHO would be python. Aaron has grey and back in stock and I think either would look awesome on the speedy with a contrast stitching - grey python with black stitching or black with grey.

The deployant coming out on the Grey Side of the Moon in November has me considering my first chrono! We'll be in Vegas mid November and I plan to visit the Boutique there and check it out.

The deployant coming out on the Grey Side of the Moon in November has me considering my first chrono! We'll be in Vegas mid November and I plan to visit the Boutique there and check it out. It is a beautiful watch. I was also told that they have a new manufacturer for their leather straps. I have seen and felt a couple of the new ones, and they feel softer and more like already worn-in.
They also now are starting to use new wooden boxes for all their watches. Saw one yesterday, and they are really beautiful. Wish I had had my camera with me . Next visit I will be sure to get photos.
They also had a Speedmaster 9000, in Titanium, with a beautiful dark blue dial and blue leather strap. It really looks stunning, I only saw pics of the ti model, but much nicer in real life. The dial is almost a dark ink blue, actually I thought nicer than the AT or Orbis.

If you would consider an aftermarket strap, then check out Roverhaven. Myron is also a great guy, and he makes great straps. That is what I have been wearing my Speedmaster on for the last couple of months - excellent quality.

muckymarkI don't know, I think it's a nice contrast with the black dial. And the Hirsch Liberty is truly a quality strap, rivalling any other I have seen from the smaller manufacturers. I had one on a Breitling at one time. If you want to darken it a bit, try a bit of facial cream or moisturizer. It kind of softens the leather, and does darken it a bit. I personally like the look of that strap. Keep it on a few days, maybe it will grow on you. Cheers, Carl

carlThanks for the tips. I'll give them a try. For some strange reason the Bay in Willowbrook small has an extensive Hirsch display. I'll see what the darker browns/tans look like. BTW we need to set up a GTG soon. Mark
