Finally, I got this beauty out of the drawer this evening. When I strapped it on my wrist, I realized that regardless of how much I might want a new watch, I just do not think it would be wise to sell this one. Sometimes, we have to take and post pics and do a bit of dialogue along with them, to remind us how beautiful some of these pieces are. I am very impulsive when it comes to getting a new watch, and sometimes even quite ruthless in disposing of beautiful pieces. This time, with this one, I hope that I have the good sense to make an exception.
I posted this in the Grand Seiko forum over on WUS as well. It was recently started by Topper:
This is definitely one of my watches that does not get enough attention. I wanted to show the uniqueness of this piece in the current Grand Seiko lineup, and the features that give it a distinctive, vintage look.
The shape of the case is very retro, including the lugs. And the lovely dome crystal that rises a couple of mm above the bezel. The shape gives almost a hesalite look, and when looked at from certain angles, distorts the hands and markers in a very pleasant way:
The blued second hand is a beautiful and subtle touch. Normally on a dress watch such as this, I would prefer no date function. However, this date window has been done beautifully, with the silver background that matches the window frame and other silver elements of the dial. It almost enhances the dial rather than detract from it IMO. The applied, raised GS logo is also a nice touch. Apparently, the applied GS logos are actually raised very slightly off the dial to give depth:
Note that the smaller marker beside the date window is also applied, and not just painted like on some of the models. Not a huge deal, but it really finishes off the perfect dial:
The alligator strap is as fine a quality as you will find on any watch. And the deployment buckle is excellent. It also has a steel keeper under the wrist - although it does make the clasp rather thick - that protects the leather from scrapes and scratches:
Here are some pics which I took previously:
Of course, the beauty of the ivory colour dial is another feature that sets it apart. I believe it is the only model in current production that has this dial.
I do spend a great deal of time looking at watches of all types and all prices. It is my humble opinion that not even considering price, it is very difficult to find any dress watch that comes close to this, or has the features and the fit and the finish that this has. And it also keeps excellent time, rivaling the Hi-Beat and most of the other automatic watches I have owned. It really must be seen to be totally appreciated.
Thanks for looking.
