My visit to the Omega Boutique today deserves it's own thread. Thanks to Jike and Calvin who spent over two hours with me while we analyzed every detail of this beautiful watch. The guys never let me down, Jike phoned me almost the minute they received the Globemaster for the first time today. And I have the esteemed honour of being the first client, I suppose in all of Canada, to try one of these on my wrist .
At first glance, to quote an article in Hodinkee, "The Globemaster in steel, at 39mm in diameter, is a rather austere affair." It does appear fairly plain and is certainly not fancy. For me, the beauty is in it's simplicity. And, as simple as it may be on first glance, after thorough inspection, the fine details and craftsmanship begin to emerge. There is definitely a warmth and smoothness, especially the model with the grey dial and the beautiful bracelet that is so obviously made just for this watch. It is supremely comfortable, and definitely a watch that would take absolutely no getting used to on my wrist.
The size, to me, is perfect. It actually feels and looks smaller than the 38.5mm Aqua Terra, and it also seems quite a bit thinner. Not quite sure how they do that, except it was explained that the case back is not screwed in but mounted on the case and held in place with four screws.
Definitely not a watch for everyone, especially if you like bigger watches. 39mm case, 20mm lug width. And the watch really does feel and wear like 39mm to my delight, and certainly not larger.
The bracelet is very interesting, made up of very narrow links. No need for half links here. And it is brushed on both top and at the sides. The interesting feature is that each of the links has a slightly tapered edge, and that very narrow edge is polished so that the bracelet matches up with the polished edge of the case.
Well, enough chat from me. I did take quite a few pics, so please bear with me:
And a few pics of the beautiful blue dial - very much like the DeVille Orbis - and blue strap:

It's the silver dial and steel bracelet for me, no doubt. In the end, I suppose it will depend upon whether I like this Globemaster better than my Rolex Air-King and my Grand Seiko Hi-Beat. At least there is lots of time to figure that one out. I think this model will be around for a long time. Only thing is with our dollar here in Canada, the price will inevitably increase, probably early in the Spring.
Thanks for looking and reading, and thanks to all of you at the Boutique for always making my visit a total pleasure.
Cheers,
Carl
