Never thought I would see this: A quartz model with an exhibition back. And a very nice looking watch it is, too. It also has a crown guard . It also has an updated quartz movement, the 9F82 which, I believe, has pick-of-the-crop quartz crystals and accurate to +-5sec/year instead of the usual 10sec. And it's a limited edition as well of 600 pieces. Normally, I would not care for an exhibition case back for a quartz watch, but this is such a special movement that I kind of feel it deserves it, although it might take a bit of getting used to. Has a champagne dial and looks like a blued second hand as well! 38mm case.

For me, the exhibition back is to show off the movement of the movement (pun intended) and this is static, so I'm not sure I'm a fan.

Hmmm... I'm on the fence. I like the watch, but I'd like to see it in person before I make a final decision.
Looks like a trip to timeless is in order.

I would be very interested to hear what you have to say about it. They do have it on their website, but might not be in stock. Although, being a Boutique, they may well have one. Not too much info about it, but I understand it was just released in January. Very unusual configuration for a quartz watch. Crown guards and exhibition back. I understand the crown guards being on the new diver quartz models.

I can tell you that I don't like the battery being in plain view. There are many watches with display back that have almost a full plate, with just about no movement being shown. They are mostly from German brands, with Lange and GO making the most.
With that said, having a solid plate doesn't bother me as long as it is finished properly, but the battery does bother me. It highlights a 2 dollars part of a very expensive watch.

It's a neat concept but for me personally the case back doesn't quite work on this watch. Quartz or not, I can understand them wanting to showcase the decorated movement plates. Those are more interesting in comparison to a stamped / engraved case back. As Chip mentions though it isn't looking as it should with the battery on full display. I'm sure some can appreciate things the way they are for this watch but it's no comparison to the mechanical Grand Seiko watches showing the actual "movement".

Why would you put a display back on a Quartz watch? I mean really, do you want to see the battery?

Well, I much prefer the GS Lion emblem on the back. I am not really a big fan of exhibition case backs in any case, but this one in particular. This is my preference: Overall, including case and dial, I prefer my own with the white dial anyway:

I like the design, and the whole watch. While I find the choice of a display back to be peculiar, it is on the back after all, so it would not stop me from having that watch if I was in the market.

Maybe not my cup of tea. I prefer seeing moving parts in there through the glass...

I actually got to see this model in real life today. I don't get to the Grand Seiko AD very often, as it had been a while thought I would pay a visit. Due to their limited selection, this is about the last model I expected to see there: Alongside my white dial quartz SBGX059: Beautiful curved lugs and I like the way the bezel tapers inward to the case as well: MSRP is $3900CAD (appx. $3000USD) which is the same as in the USA. The SBGX063, which is the model I have only with the champagne dial instead of white is $3000CAD. For $900CAD the difference is worth it IMO. Bearing in mind it also has the even higher end movement 9F82, although I cannot imagine a more accurate watch than the one I have. Since making the adjustment for Daylight Savings Time in April, the watch has neither gained nor lost a single second. Once I finally get off my ass and sell my other two Grand Seikos and my Speedy, my plan is to get one more Grand Seiko quartz, likely with a champagne dial. Then I will have the two GS quartz and my Oris Divers Sixty-Five. Perhaps this will end up being my second quartz GS.

Come to Dallas and get it from Dan. You'll get to meet a few of us in the process as well.

Here are a couple more excellent side view pics I found on a French site. The pictures really show the beautiful lug shape as well as that tapered bezel. Those are the two things that really got to me the most when I saw the watch today: As I mentioned, I started being somewhat enthusiastic about the watch when I first heard of it, but seeing it person really made me take notice. Here is a link to the site where these pics are from, really all excellent shots. Just wish my French was better! forum.chronomania.net/mix_entry.php?id=241735#.V7vH5I-cHIUTook me a while to realize what the familiarity was when I saw the watch from the side. Somehow it reminds me of the Seiko Ananta.
