Ok, think about this for a second. A mechanical clock made to self power and run for 10,000 years with no human intervention. It going to be built in a boring in a mountain ~200 feet high with a crystal on top, which will use the light each day at noon to reset itself for accuracy and changes in temperature to wind itself. The project idea was to build something now that is historically significant like the pyramids but with an eye towards the future to get people to think about what their actions today mean for generations living in 10 millennia (400 generations). There is no completion date yet, but when done, it will be open to the public to visit. The first one is being built in Texas. They already have plans for a second one in Nevada as well. Full Story Here: longnow.org/clock/I love this story, but I worry about it actually making it for 10,000 years. Between mechanical failures, natural disasters, wars, encroachment of civilization, vandalism, etc - the changes seem thin. That said, what a cool project to be involved with and see. It’s definitely be on my bucket list!

I heard about this the other day. I think it is really cool. Even if it doesn’t make it 10000 years, but goes 500 years without any malfunction, it would be a mind blowing achievement.
