Hello, I'm new to watch collecting and would appreciate input from people more familiar than me with what's on the market that matches my needs. I'm in search of one single watch that has the following features, not necessarily in order of importance:
Movement: not a deal breaker, but I'd prefer automatic. Case size: in the range of 40mm, give or take. Chronograph: ideally a 12-hour chronograph (analog). Bezel: unidirectional with 12 or 24-hour markings. GMT: need a dedicated hand for a second time zone. Water resistance: 200m or more Large, simple, easy to read display Date display
Price range: $4,000 or less on the used market
Less important features: Bracelet/strap - I don't have a strong preference on material/design Color - prefer neutral colors like black or silver/stainless steel, but open to others
Features I don't want: Tachymetre Small print on dial or bezel
Is there anything that meets all of these criteria? The closest match I have found is the Breitling Chronomat GMT, but this is a bit higher price and it has a tachymetre.
I also like the look of the Bremont ALT-1 Zulu, but this lacks an outer bezel and has 10ATM water resistance.

Welcome. I'd suggest one place to go is chrono24. Search "GMT chronograph". Filter results with "automatic" movement. 608 results many within your price range. Here's a new/unworn Seamaster Professional 300M in your price range at bobswatches. Box/Papers. Ref. 212.30.44.52.01.001 . Checks your boxes except it's 44mm. $3895k. Also one in blue. $3895. Happy hunting.

Welcome to the forum. That is a lot to ask for in one watch. The water resistance, GMT, chrono, and rotating bezel combination narrows things down quickly and I'm not sure if it exists. The closest thing I can think of is the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-Axial GMT Chronograph (231.13.44.52.06.001) - 44mm, GMT, bidirectional 24 hr bi-directional bezel, no tachy, but only 150M WR. Others that come to mind but miss the mark are: The Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph GMT is 45mm, and has a fixed ceramic bezel and only 100m WR. The Tag Heuer Autavia is 40mm, but no GMT and only 100m WR. The Breitling Navitimer World GMT is 46mm, 100m WR, and bi-directional bezel. rw16610 is a big chrono fan, so maybe he has some ideas.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, keep them coming, I appreciate it. I've stumbled across the chrono24 site but hadn't thought to create a search query using my criteria - that's a good idea. I realise that this is a lot of functionality in an uncommon combination to find in a single watch. I understand I may need to be flexible around these priorities, so I'd be willing to forgo features that are less important to me in order to get those I care about most. Cheers!

Welcome to the forum! Breitling and Omega will certainly be two or the top choices for this in my opinion. Luckily some other brands like Tag Heuer, and I believe Fortis just to name a few are worth a look.
For the sake of versatility and functionality my vote would go for the Breitling. My next purchase in 2021 will likely be the Chronomat 44.
This is a fun journey to be on! Can't wait to see what other pieces you consider.

As you pointed out in the original post, it’s pretty much everything but just 100m WR.

Okay, let’s think outside the box - Breitling Aerospace! It has a digital Chrono, digital GMT, and all the other things you are asking for except it’s 100m WR. Server also of us on the forum have an Aerospace and love them.

Searching Ebay "GMT chronograph" with filters for "men" , "mechanical (automatic)" , "price $2,000 - $4,000" , " Authenticity Guarantee" , reveals 279 watches that include 4 handers. I'll toss this one in from jomashop...BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon Spacemaster Orbital II Chronograph GMT Automatic Men's Watch DC3036C-SA-BK. 45mm, 100m w/r, titanium, bi - direction bezel $2475

All excellent options, thank you. The Ball is sharp - I hadn't considered a compass bezel. I love analog navigation and this would add an element of functionality I had forgotten a watch could perform. I think the Bremont is still a leading candidate because it's so clean and elegant, as well as less common. Plus I have a fondness for understated British design. But I think I'd be happy with any of these suggestions.

This is fantastic as you've got so many more options now. I'm sure as the search continues more will arise.
