Hi everyone. I am Marco, a first time user from Finland. I have a problem; I have had this urge to get me a Rolex watch for a decade now but I still don't know why. I am about to loose this battle against becoming 12500 € poorer and I would like to know the reason that is hiding from me inside my head. My watch of choice is Rolex Datejust II 41 mm with Wimbledon dial and green Roman numerals ( ref 116333)
What have been your reasons for your watch purchases?

Welcome to the madness Marco! It sounds like you have the sickness and there is no cure! LOL
Everyone has different reasons for wanting their first Rolex. For me, the first one was to celebrate a huge work achieve the in my life. I had been named as a key person in a contract we won and completed the job ahead of schedule and under budget, so I got a nice bonus. I had always admired Rolex watches and had my eye on a 16600 Sea Dweller, so I finally bought it and could not have been happier.
Since then, I have purchased other watches for fun, and still others for commemorating other life events such as:
A Breitling Avenger Blackbird for my 50th birthday
A Nomos Neomatik 42 as a present from my wife for our 15th anniversary
An Omega Apollo 8 Speedmaster with the “See you on the other side” inscription to commemorate the loss of my father and to remember I will see him again in heaven
I also have a white gold Submariner on order to commemorate retiring and turning 60 this year.
And I’m just one person. Others buy for their own reasons too. I’ve heard people buy a watch the year a child was born to wear with the intention of passing it on to them when they get married or graduate college.
Again, welcome to the forum and we look forward to seeing pictures when you get it!

Welcome to the forum! Mechanical watches are fantastic. Not many things made today will be around for decades or generations, but good mechanical watches will be.
Fun is the number one reason, buying a piece that makes you happy. Life's too short, so I'm glad you're going ahead with this and getting started.

The bragging rights and brand recognition. Plus, I didn't have to work for it. All free money from the stock market, capital gains and dividends.

Welcome! Well look at it this way. Mechanical watches don't have to be recharged every night, they do not have planned obsolescence built into software they rely on, and above all they have engineering excellence and craftsmanship and beauty no smartwatch could ever posses. If you take good care of one, it'll easily outlast you! Yes, I have an Apple watch. It tracks workouts pretty well. but for telling time...

I finally did it! I got me the Oyster Perpetual Datejust. I thought that all Rolex models need to be waited for at least a couple of years but one official Rolex store here in Finland had one of those in stock so I took it. Now I am 10500 € poorer but happy.

Thank You for those kind words! I just went to an AD just to try some of my favourite watches on, knowing that they were "for exhibition only" Suddenly the clerk said that they had one watch available and my heart almost stopped beating. "Bring it to me, please" I managed to say, and she did. It looked good.
My girlfriend was with me and she agreed with me on that.
After I remembered, that my Amex didn't have a limit, I bought the damn thing.
I am a teacher and my students will be talking about the watch when they see it shining on my wrist. Of course every 13-16 year old child knows what a Rolex is. Next week would be easier for me, if I had bought a Patek Philippe instead but I'm too poor to do that.

That's a great story, finnishmace ! It'll only make you appreciate the watch more with each glance at it. Many do know Rolex, but that's ok. You worked incredibly hard and waited so long, you truly deserve it. This should inspire them to vigorously pursue their dreams despite the odds, for anything they want to do or achieve in the future.
