Stumbled across this video from Business Week online. It's about 3 minutes long, and the reporter puts on an $11,000 Piguet and a $20,000 Vacheron to see if anyone notices on the street. Nobody does, so he ends up having to ask people on the street what them would pay for the watches. The most common answers: between $50 and $250!!!! The peoples' reactions are great. Click on link, then click on "View with Windows Media/Flash" www.businessweek.com/mediacenter/video/bwweekend/bcae3fc1506dedb521bb1b97da423bfc3fe1f55b.htmlTo the mods: feel free to move this link to the lounge if you feel it's more appropriate there. I couldn't decide where to put it.

Good thing I'm not a watch enthusiast to get noticed. All that matters for me is that I can feel and see the difference in quality with the watches I collect.

The guy in the studio had on a Datejust. So, 9.5 Billion in watch sales last year. Wonder how that number would have been different without Mike. ;D That whole bit showed that you should buy the watch for yourself and not for anyone else. I mean, who would actually expect the general public to know what an AP is. Wonder if they had a Rolex in the mix what people would have said they would pay for that. Now that would have been interesting to see how much brand recognition comes into play.

I agree with Sam. If they did a brand recognition test it would be a different story. One of the few times I had someone notice my Rolex, he thought it was worth about $10,000 more than I paid for it. Funny how people have opinions yet know nothing about the subject. I have only once had someone comment on my Panerai, a waiter in a restaurant. He asked to confirm I had a Panny on and that he had a UN a couple of years back but stupidly sold it to buy a car. He said he wants to get a panny now... That was cool.

You're right Johnny....the average Joe thinks you have to take out a second mortgage to buy a Rolex. Well, some people do that but they don't have much in the way of smarts. People think a Rolex costs a hundred grand or something. When in the big picture, a Rolex is more of an "entry level" watch when compared to the big dollar Swiss brands.

Come on Sam... only a complete MORON would take a second mortgage to finance a watch. No one is that stoopid, right? I used to buy into the Rolex as the be-all end-all of watches, but as I imformed myself, I quickly learned that while yes, they are a great brand that makes tough as nails watches, in the grand scheme of Swiss/German watchmakers, Rolex is basically the entry level for those with deep pockets and good taste. I never once, however, had a non-WIS comment on my Rolex. But they are about the most recognized luxrury watch brand in the world, thanks to some very slick and expensive marketing.

NO ONE could be that much of a moron to do something THAT stoopid and end up with a watch that doesn't even have his name on the papers. That's too insane to be true.

Great video clip Ryan, I loved the people's reactions when they told them how much they cost I agree with the commentator I would never spend 20k on the "crazy hours" muller either I'm with you on that! Most of the Frank Muller line doesn't interest me...... I love the guesses regarding the value. LOL!

Yeah, if you're buying watches to impress other people, you've got the wrong idea!

I just watched that clip. Funny. None of the narrators pronounced the names correctly. LOL and I think that the studio guy wanted to show off his DJ.
