I was out today working and this guy happened to notice my watch briefly and asked me if it was the Explorer II. After discovering that we both were WIS's we talked for a good few minutes about Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe and many other brands. His wife was even wearing his Yacht-Master and took it off for me to look at (I never asked by the way!).
Anyway, he gave me his card to let him know if I see any good Patek Philippe watches for sale in Toronto and also to show him my collection of Rolex accessories. It turns out this guy is the studio coordinator on a hit TV show that films here in Canada, Degrassi... I sent him the email the some of the images from my gallery to look at as I'm sure he will enjoy them based on the way he reacted to the watch.
I just found it neat how Rolex (or any other nice watch) can also become a conversation piece and even possibly help with networking in some cases. Not to mention it just goes to show how small the world is! Anyway I just wanted to share with you all as it does not often happen where I run into other watch lovers outside of the forums.

That's really cool, Rommel. Did you tell him about WWF? There are numerous sellers here who can probably help him acquire what's he's after for.

I did mention to him that the things he was being shown in the email are from a forum I frequent. I'm sure he'll eventually get back to me and when he does you can count on the fact that he will know about WWF He wants that Patek badly, so hopefully he understands how much easier it would be to import one vs relying on Toronto's crap market. The crazy thing about Patek is the way they under supply the demand as you know. It's not as easy as walking into an AD with A LOT of money and leaving with a watch. Pre owned is the only way to go for so many of those.

Very cool meeting Rommel. I love meeting fellow watch lovers in the wild.
Not quite the same, but I had dinner with my cousin from VA and her husband last night on their way home from visiting their son in Aspen. Both were wearing DJs and George had a nice TT with white dial, Roman numerals and black hands (really nice) and Elaine's (mt cousin) was a ladies TT with MOP dial and diamond markers. I talked to them about independent watchmakers for less expensive service and Veraet (now Wrist Clean). It was great to see them again and nice to be able to talk to someone in the family about watches who doesn't glaze over in 20 seconds with boredom!

It's great that you also had a very similar experience! Steve (the guy from today) even pointed out what a small world it is for the watch lovers around town as we know of the same people / sellers. It's actually the second time this happened in the last few months which was shocking. The last time me and this guy with a Deep Sea Sea-Dweller had a chat about Rolexes and the local places to buy them from.
The fact that you were able to share this passion with family members makes it even more special in my opinion. I had no idea they re branded the product line but either way that stuff's incredible and I still use it weekly after all of these years.
Thankfully we live in an era with the internet! Prior to the forums it must have been a bit harder to make friends who share the passion for time pieces. Hopefully you get the chance to get together with them in the near future again and carry on with the discussion that was started!

If it wasn't for these forums, I would hardly have anyone to share my watch passions with. I did go out for a great evening with my brother, his wife and a great friend last night. A few months ago, I had given my brother our Father's 50s Omega Bumper that I had serviced, cleaned and put on a nice leather bracelet and Omega buckle. Was so pleased that he is wearing it, and it really looked fantastic on his wrist. It seems to have sparked a bit of interest in watches with him as well, and showed him some pics I have taken. Maybe there's hope for him yet!? I'm wishing that one day I could meet someone out in the wild as well who has an active interest in watches. Great story! Cheers, Carl

Way to share the passion carl. ;D Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards Agreed! This watch passion does seem to be infectious to a certain extent. Over the years I've convinced my fair share of people both in person locally and online to purchase watches ranging from G-Shocks to Ladies Omega Seamasters etc. I also feel that the more events Carl attends at the Omega boutique the more likely it is to have this happen in person for a change. The thing is most that I've come across don't bother to go as far as commenting on a piece and getting into a discussion about the history and so on. Looking back over the years I've been very fortunate to come across quite a few WIS's in person here in Toronto. Co workers, random people who notice what I'm wearing and AD staff that are also into this. The two AD staff members that come to mind are 1) The guy from Solaris on Front and Bay street, downtown Toronto in the TD Bank tower. He told me all about his 16610 Submariner, Speedmaster Moon watch and Tag Heuer. 2) The guy from Birks in Fairview Mall (Toronto) saw my watch, told me he used to work for Rolex and then showed me his Diamond hour marker Datejust. 3) The VP of another dealer here that sells mainly Omega would always keep me in the store for literally 30 mins if not more, just talking about the Omega brand and our passion for it etc. Vancouver is a big city as well so I'm sure It'll happen sooner or later considering the fact you now frequent the boutique and their events as a V.I.P.

If you think it's hard for you GUYS to find fellow WISes, imagine how it it for ME. People just don't understand my affection for watches. My youngest son is somewhat interested, and wears a vintage Rolex. I have given a nice watch, or two, to all of my immediate family members, and they appreciate them, but it hasn't really sparked a great interest, with Ian being the lone exception. My girlfriends think my hobby is "neat", but they don't get it. Thank goodness I have YOU GUYS!

My girlfriends think my hobby is "neat", but they don't get it. Thank goodness I have YOU GUYS! We all can relate to that for sure but it certainly seems tough for you! Having these forums genuinely enhances the experiences. I look forward to signing on and reading the new posts not to mention adding a few of my own. Just going into AD's, reading magazines and looking over brand catalogs is no comparison to sharing the passion with others across the globe! Lucky for me indeed that most of the people I hang out with in person here understand my hobby or suffer from this themselves. It's true what you say though. I hardly ever see women that are as passionate as us forum members about watches compared to the guys around Toronto. I do remember seeing a young girl in the Omega AD (Toronto Eaton Centre) a few years back trying on Planet Oncean's. The look in her eye reminded me of us Very cool, watches are definitely great conversation pieces Certainly! I'm slowly having this proven to me in time. It reminds me of the story a Marketing professor told us many years back. Basically how there was this guy in the office (a boss I believe) that was very difficult to deal with. In fact, a lot of people avoided him or could not figure him out. Because of an upcoming project he needed to find a way to get past his defenses essentially. During a meeting in the bosses office he noticed some lovely artwork on his wall. Being a connoisseur himself, he commented on the pieces of art which lead to a very long discussion similar to the one I recently had. After that things changed and people wondered how he managed to become such good friends with the boss. I guess when we have a passion that's so hard to share with friends locally we embrace the opportunity to cross paths in a good way with other WIS's in the wild so to speak. What a cool meeting, very cool indeed! Yeah, it makes me hope to have a watch get together in Toronto some day in the future. Gathering with a group who have this same interest would be quite neat. For car clubs it's awesome so this should be no different!
