I believe they call that color Admiralty grey, and it is the official color used by the British Royal Navy, on their mil-subs. Isn't it scary that I KNOW that!? . kat

And you can't get any more genuine Military NATO than one that has come directly from a great member of the British Army! And as to scary Kat, I put the "O" in CD!

We normally put them on these watches. We found the CWC to be the most durable, the Pulsar watches were very fragile in comparison, a lot of the time the crowns broke.

I love those Dave! Don't know what it is about the CWC but I prefer that one even though it looks so similar. I have never heard of them, do they sell them to Civvy street?

Truly a wonderful gesture and a great gift, Dave! I am most honoured that I will be sharing in that as well. It will look amazing on my Waltham RCAF as well, I think, as my '63 Seamaster. Of course, I will post pics when I get the strap on the watch. Too kind of Ian also go give me one of those. I don't think that I will ever find a NATO that will be as special as this will be! The one I really want to see it on badly is the '42 Waltham RCAF. I think it is the most appropriate! I actually found a very nice Hirsch black calf leather for the RCAF. I believe it is the only strap Hirsch makes that does not have a taper. I'm betting the NATO looks even better, though. Cheers, Carl

Wow! The CWC (Cabot Watch Company), I would never have discovered if it was not for Dave's kindness, and this thread: www.cwcwatch.com/"Our timepieces have been supplied to all branches of the armed services. Founded in 1972, Cabot Watch Company (CWC) has been a contractor to H.M. forces for over 30 years. CWC offers a 3 year warranty on all watches." I am going to have a ball looking through this website! Cheers, Carl

What a fantastic gesture and so kind. Dave is a true gent, for sure. Is that NATO blue, in the first pictures? I believe they issued some blue ones as well. Man, I'd love to be able to get one of those for my GMT, or even an admiralty grey one, which was genuine 'military issue'. I've had a couple of the Phoenix ones, but they just don't seem to be up to scratch imho.
There's a snooty watchmaker here in the old town in Zurich, and he has a bunch of 'genuine Rolex' - issued NATOs, but he refused to sell me one! T0$$er!

Karl, I stand to be corrected on this but I think these are Phoenix. I think they have always held the MOD contract. Perhaps Dave has the definitive answer as my information has only been gleaned off the net and we know how reliable that can be at times!

Whilst searching as to the official supplier of NATO's to the MOD I found this fascinating PDF from the MOD laying out the requirements for supplying a certified watch Strap to the British Armed Forces.. Being the Nerd I am I found it fascinating! Kat, your right, Admiralty grey is the colour and seems to be the only official colour specified! www.h-spot.net/watches/mod/watchstraps_2001.pdf

Hope that will help.

That's great Dave, thank you! The ones you gave me say 18 on the buckle which. I assume means 18mm? They fit my lugs to a T today. Yesterday when I fitted them there was about 1mm gap but this being fabric it will expand a little with use as I found just, looking now!
This is my first NATO, I had no idea how comfy they are!
This grey as well is a really adaptable colour, I think it would go with any dial or case colour.

I have a grey one like that, but cannot remember where I bought it. If you saw my box o' straps, you would understand why. I do know that I always look for quality before price, so it probably meets mil specs. Also, Maratac makes some nice Natos, and other mil spec straps, which are of very high quality. As for the width, it is my understanding that it was common for the BRN guys to use an 18 mm NATO on a 20 mm lug width diver. There are some collectors of military watches who will deliberately outfit their 20 mm lug width vintage diver that way. Don't ask me how I know this. As for CWC, and Silverman's, I have been a long time fan, and purchased a CWC quartz military watch for my hubby, about 2 years ago, as they are pretty close to the one issued to the guys in Vietnam,of which he is a US Army veteran. He loves that watch. Do not buy similar looking watches on Ebay. They are, indeed, counterfeits, or copies. Order from Silverman's.
