That's a whole lot of money.
I saw that watch not long ago, I believe on Hodinkee, and I was fairly shocked to see a Rolex with a dial such as that one.
Did the buyer over pay or got a good deal?
Time will tell.
The irony here is that Rolex won't service it, even though it was the highest price paid for a watch they made.

You've got to be kidding me, it's ugly as well.

That's quite the price! Never seen a Rolex with this sort of dial before, and it's clearly a rare piece (obviously). Anyhow I was there chances are my bids would have been on other watches, but the new owner must be thrilled!

That's a beautiful watch IMHO. Rolex have a vintage restoration service now for the well heeled customer - I'm sure they'd love to service this one if it ever needed it.

In the eye of the beholder I guess, IMO a bit on the busy side.

I must admit, I am with Pete on this one, its beautiful. I always have admired the art of enamelers this one is beautifully done. I bet Rolex would make an exception on servicing this one as well.
I really like this period in Rolex's history, they were so much more avant garde in what they would do for individual clients. That all seemed to change in the early eighties though it does look like they are coming back to it now, especially with their gem set pieces.

These beauties are not meant to be functional dive watches. They're works of art.

Wow, the cloisonne dial is beautiful. Now the color tones and aren't to my particular taste, but the artistry is amazing. One day, I hope to own a cloisonne dial watch, albeit far from this $1.2M price tag!

Not sure if folks have seen this before but VC are keeping the art alive.. Absolutely love it! Like Roger, I feel it would be an honor to own one of those watches some day! That being said though for some strange reason that Rolex does not offer the same reaction (in me) that these Vacheron Constantin pieces do. Different strokes for different folks is all it is I'll assume. Either that or it's just me having a hard time appreciating the aged dial with that domed crystal. On a different strap though I'm confident it would look a bit better!
