Nomos 2015: Every New Model & Movement
2015 was a great year for Nomos, arguably their best year since their beginning in 1990. It saw the introduction of new models, new versions of existing models, new movements and even a Timeless Luxury Watches collaborative piece. Continue below to learn everything happening with Nomos in 2015.
Of course, the biggest news to come from Nomos Glashutte this year is the introduction of an all-new movement, designed and manufactured entirely in-house, the DUW 3001. If you're a Nomos fan, you may be wondering why this is a big deal--after all, Nomos already had a fully in-house portfolio already.
Well, the answer is simple: it's thin. I can already hear you ask--how thin is it? The short answer is really, really thin. The long answer is 3.2 millimeters, or thinner than the comparable Jaeger LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Date by 0.1mm. So it's almost as thin as some manual wind watches yet it's still an automatic, and beautifully decorated by Nomos as well. Naturally, given such an amazing new movement, you're going to want to put it into some brand new models--and that's exactly what Nomos did.
The first watch that Nomos is putting the DUW 3001 in is the Tangente Automatik. This confused us quite a bit because we had always taken Tangente to require being manually wound--but it turns out, Nomos just intended the Tangente line to be very thin. The cleverly named Tangente Automatik will featured bright red accents but gives up the blued hands in favor of black ones.
But my favorite DUW 3001 entrant is the all-new Minimatik, the beginning of what will presumably become a surprisingly playful line of watches for Nomos. The Minimatik differs primarily in its lack of seriousness with its red lacquered hands and blue Arabic numerals--the Minimatik is a bolder, more colorful watch than Nomos typically makes, yet still retains classic Nomos Tangente-esque styling.
Although it didn't receive as much attention as the DUW 3001, another new movement is coming this year, the DUW 4101, an update to the last-generation Beta manual wind movement. The 4101 differs mainly in that includes Nomos' in-house Swing System escapement and blued hairspring. Naturally, like the DUW 3001, it warrants some new watches as well--and it got them.
The first of the three watches to utilize this movement comes in the form of the new Metro Datum. The Metro Datum is not a replacement for last year's Metro but instead an additional model, making Metro a line, not an individual watch. The most obvious difference between the new model and the original is the lack of a power reserve, or gangreserve as Nomos calls it. Instead, there is a simple date at 6:00.
The Metro, in Metro Datum form, is also available for the first time with a black dial. Despite a simpler dial, the Metro Datum, in either color, grows by 1.5mm into the versatile 38.5mm size. Nonetheless, most of the original Metro's styling cues remain, including the simple black hands, wire lugs and the use of small colored dots as hour markers. This time, however, the seafoam markers have been replaced by mint blue, an improvement in my opinion--both new models, despite the increase in size, are a little bit simpler and cleaner than their predecessor.
Of course, the most exciting utilization of the new DUW 4101 is in a Club limited edition--namely, the Timeless Club. The new Timeless Club is a spiritual successor to the discontinued manual wind Club Datum and incorporates its 38.5mm case, luminous hands and numerals. However, it's updated with a red seconds hand and with Nomos' deep blue lacquer dial, the latter borrowed from the high-end Lambda. Just 100 pieces will be made.
While not technically a recent release, this is a good time to update our buyer's guide with the addition of three colorful new Nomos Lux Variants.
Aside from the three colors, Cicada, Ermine and Sable, the case has been altered slightly--it's now in rose gold, but the bezel remains stainless steel.
The movement remains the same, the gorgeous, high-end DUW 2002 manual wind.
The Nomos Lambda also received a few important updates. First, it's finally available with blued hands. The Lambda prototypes originally had blued hands, at least the white gold model did, but for some reason they were discarded on the way to production. This year, they're back, and they look tremendous.
Second, a new ruthenium dial is available--this is the third of three colors available, the others being white and deep blue. The new ruthenium models appears to be available exclusively in the rose gold case, but the gold hands look tremendous against the black background.
Finally, and most importantly, the Lambda will now be available in a smaller 39mm case--a much more versatile size, in my opinion. It appears that the 39mm case will, at least initially, only have the white gold and yellow gold white dial models, with blued hands, as options. It's important to note that these photos are of the 42mm version although from what we've seen the 39mm will look virtually identical.
So that's Nomos' 2015 summarized--their best year yet? You decide in the comments.
