My wife would like to get my son an "inexpensive" DSLR for Christmas, approx $300 max. I know that's kind of a crazy unrealistic number for a new design but maybe not for an older model so that's why I came looking for help. My old Canon EOS T1i crapped out a few years ago when the shutter motor stopped working. At the time I took it to the camera shop and it was determined cost prohibitive to fix $$$. I currently own the kit 18-55mm lens and an additional Canon EF-S 55-250mm, both image stabilizing and various other bits that he'd be free to use. So my thinking is that even an older model kit might be out of range but maybe not a compatible body, as long as it can competently use my image stabilizing lenses. New T1i cameras are no longer available new so I can't just go that route. I need to find a different, compatible model

I don't know much, if any, about Canon. For that price you'd be looking at a several years old cropped sensor, I'd say something in the 4-6 years old range. I could be wrong, of course, as the recent years have seen the introduction of many budget minded entry level DSLRs.

Good news. We're watching the Black Friday deals for a Canon T6 kit including 18-55 AND 75-300 lens all for about $450. It's not the T6i but still should be all he needs for this stage of the game.

I have always been a Canon guy, and love my 700D with 18-135mm STM lens. I would recommend EOS also, and why not when you have those lenses ? 👍🏼

We got the kit for my son and gave it to him for Christmas. He was thrilled. The best part? My wife got me the same kit. What a surprise. I'd been without a DSLR for 3 years since my old T1i died. Pretty happy over here.
