OK, guys, so why the Sea-Dweller over the Sub? I'm saving for a Rolex as my next major purchase, either the TT Sub or SD, and I'll need to make this decision in 2 or 3 years. What are the real differences? I know I can go to the Rolex site and view the specs, but I want to hear from owners. Wrist feel, construction etc. Oh...one more question. Do folks think that Rolex is really worth the monetary premium? Honestly. I know their reputation and "mystique" level is high, but really, are they worth it? I have an Omega SMP GMT and it's one friggin' nice timepiece. Hard to really believe that the Rolex is twice as good at twice the price. No flames, please. I'm really trying to figure this out. Best, Ben

Ben, both choices are well constructed, but i personally prefere the heft of the SD. The sub felt rather too light for my tastes.. compared to my SMP Bond.. The SD is heavier but not uncomfortably so. Also i dont like the cyclops, and needed a date complication.. so the SD is an obvious choice. With regards to whether rolex is worth 2 x as much as an omega SMP..(actually in uk street price is closer to 3x at the moment) i would say no way. I think that rolex is better constructed overall marginally, look at the sub corwn stem/ SD crown stem..vs omega.. look at the bezel etc etc.. but this is only marginal.. for the price point omega is hard to beat! Will i buy any more rolexes.. well at the current level of price increases i dont think so.. this is the second 10% price increase in just over a year..and when they get upgraded to maxi dials etc.. expect a further hike in prices..although i cant sing the praises of my SD enough.. i just dont think it is worth close to £2750 and climbing!

Hi Ben,
First of all congrats on considering Rolex as your next watch purchase! Now, why the Dweller over the Sub. I don't know the Dweller is "better" than the Sub. Both are great watches with long and storied histories. I think people prefer one over the other purely for subjective reasons. I voted for the Sub. Afew monthe ago this same question was asked in another venue and I voted for the Dweller....Go figure. Some like the cyclops over the date(Me),some prefer the clean, utilatarian look of the Dweller. I certainly see fewer Dwellers than I do Subs in my area,so maybe the "club" is a little more exclusive for the Dweller if that's a consideration. I find the Dweller sits a little higher on the wrist(it's a little thicker),and the added heft may make the watch slide a little more on the wrist. I sure your physical charaterists have something to do with that. Personally I like the lighter weight of the Sub. It's just more comfortable to me. Others like the added weight. It's really a try them both on and pick the one that's best for you. As far as build quality goes,I think they're are equal from a practical standpoint. Yes,the Dweller will go 4000ft,and the Sub"only"1000,and the Dweller has an HE valve,But really. Both use the same movement. Now,about value. I'll be the first to admit Rolex is expensive! Yes,they use a different steel. Yes,their crystals are cut differently, and Yes Rolex does not discount like some other brands allow. But, in the end much of that added expense is a subjective value of the user. Having said that however,if you are thinking about a TT Sub. you must consider the added expense you incur when you buy gold. You would be buying some of the most expensive gold there is,and will take a pretty good hit on the secondary market should you decide to sell. Hopes this helps a little.

"The value of anything is in how it makes us feel" steve Steve hit the nail on the head here. No Rolex isn't really worth the extra money over Omega, Breitling, etc. Will I buy another Rolex.....definitely! If it makes you happy, then it's worth it. BTW...welcome to the forum.
