Does anyone have any opinions about the Red Daytona (someone must). I love it/them. I think others may not. What does everyone think? Rambler

Oh I have an opinion and lust after them, but @ ~$40K USD, I think I'll set my sights a little lower.

Hey Clifton, how goes it? Wasn't thinking about a purchase (as if). Just wanted to know what everyone thought, especially after reading the article in the link - I don't think they were too well received when they first appeared. Rambler

I'm a huge fan of all the vintage Dayton's, including that RED one. Such a wild looking watch that very much falls into the exotic category. I think you are right in that originally they were not well received, but that is what makes them so sought after today. I read once on a vintage forum where some of the boys with deep pockets were starting to fear the REDs because the fakes were getting too good. At $40K and up, I'd be a little nervous too. That is way I stick with the shallow end of the collector's pool where the pieces have not yet reached the stratosphere.

I think there were only eight of these red dialled ones produced and the serial numbers are known; so at least in this instance genuineness should be easy to prove. But for others with Daytona written in red; it would be awful to find you'd received a very very good fake with that kind of money at stake. Still, all pie in the sky for me anyway. Just kind of like the red dial and white (or even black) sub dials. Rambler

If the serial numbers are known, there's a good chance the fakes have one of those 8 serial numbers.

Good point, but Rolex would presumably have to authenticate the watch(es) prior to any purchase, especially if at auction - for the kind of money the red dialled ones are going for. I think the provenance of the eight is known also. So, if you're not buying from the real owner, you're going to know, and the auction house should. Rambler
