Actually in the old GMT Masters (and probably Explorers too) the red gmt hand is on bottom. At least that's the case with my friend's GMT Master. Yup, you are exactly right JP I tried to capture that in my picture above. I think it is due to the fact that the 24hr hands is fixed.

Do you think it has anything to do with the changeover from painted to applied markers? The 24 hour hand is longer than the hour hand. By placing the hour hand on bottom, that allows a little extra clearance between the 24 hour hand and the hour markers.

I invisioned that the on the older GMT/EXP, there was some form of locking tab on the hands which is why the hour hand and 24hr hand are stacked. Don't know for sure.

The hour moves 2X as fast around the dial as the 24 hour hand so I don't see how they could be "locked" together. But then again...I don't know much about much!

Maybe they just use 2 times as large rotor or something. I've never owned a GMT watch so I dunno... Rolex GMT Master and Omega SMP GMT are very tempting though.

I don't know either, but is it possible that because the GMT-Master and I think the 1655 use the 1575 without the hour jump feature as found in the GMT II and newer EXP II? This function may mandate a certain order of the hands?
