Spoke to my AD a bit ago. For what it's worth He stated they had just received a letter from Rolex. Letter stated Rolex will be charging for the service estimate on any watch over 20 years old. Wonder if anyone else has heard this?

Wonder if that's just because a lot of the older watches don't have box & papers. People use the "service estimate" as a way to get a free authenication.

Does not surprise me either. If you opt not to have the watch serviced, Rolex still spends ~$13 to send the watch registered mail back to you. Seems they have been on the loosing end of the deal for a while. Not to mention that I'm sure many do just what Sam said to get free authentication. On that topic, Rolex also offers an authentication service, which I believe cost about $50-$60 wonkers. It is suppose to be more thorough where the SC actually consults with Geneva. I have not used this service yet, but based on my conversations with the manager at NY SC, the fakes are getting REAL good and the service centers can't keep up. My old SD just went in for an estimate, however, I don't think they charged me anything to do so. They did want to replace everything (dial, hands, bezel insert) with no option otherwise. Looks like I need to find a good watchmaker as Rolex will no longer be seeing my money.

That's a real shame Clifton. Sometimes makes you wonder who Rolex thinks the watch belongs to!

Yeah it does not make any sense to me. On one hand I can see that they don't want to warranty old parts, but why not give the paying customer an option to void majority of the warranty and just have a basic service and case polishing.
I guess collectors have been our own worst enemy. I think we may have been too picky or to difficult to work with and the Service centers just want to deal with new stuff. Kind of reminds me of cars. You take new ones to Dealers and old ones to private shops.
Oh well...

I've read reports of Rolex refusing service on certain vintage pieces due to a lack of parts. I would think a "vintage service section" would be well received not just by collectors, but by those who perhaps had a family heirloom, and wanted to keep it functional.

I've read reports of Rolex refusing service on certain vintage pieces due to a lack of parts. I've read that too Mike and that is one of the main reasons I only go back so far when I buy Vintage. I'd really love to buy and old Bond Style sub with a big crown and no crown guards, but it is the service and parts, or lack there of, that I would worry about. Ref 5508

That is the reason I have two watchmakers I can use. No RSC for my vintage. Besides, all they do on an authentication is verify the parts are real and the proper parts for the watch. A qualified watchmaker can do that. =) maverick

Well, with all due respect to you and Rolex Watches, one would think, with the amount of money that they (Rolex) made off of every sale "time compensated of course" that it should be their privilege to be able to service a watch for a customer that bought one that long ago and thought enough of it to keep it that long and want to keep it in working order, because heaven knows they will charge you enough to fix it... Just my $0.02 worth anyway... This statement in no way reflects a bad opinion of Rolex Watches or their owners, in other words, please don't get your hackles up... However, for those of you that have enough money that it really doesn't matter, this statement does not apply... Unless you want it to... a 1, 2, 3, 4, a tea for two, and two for tea, and tea for me and tea for you...
