Incoming
Thursday is the big day. Since I am a sucker for black dial watches, and now Grand Seiko, it became a must-have to get a black dial GS. Many models from which to choose, including another quartz model, a 37mm model like the one I have with the white dial. There are also a couple of other very appealing quartz models. And a 37mm Automatic.
At first, I hadn't considered the Hi-Beat, but when I read the specs and learned about all of the components, how they are made, and how they resist wear, I had to take a look. The SBGH005, which luckily my AD has, is so gorgeous and feels like it was made for me. Although it's a 40mm case, because of the shape it wears small IMO, which is a good thing for me. While I know the finish is not better than any other GS, it just feels to me as though it is. Handling this exquisite watch can, to me, be likened to handling a very expensive string of pearls. I have never seen, nor felt, any watch quite like this. It also has the proportions which appeal to me better than any other model. I was surprised to learn that it has a screw crown. A nice, wide one which screws half into the side of the case. Anyway, you can see from the pic:
I only hope that I can sleep for the next two nights!

I love the hi-beats and want one so badly. Carl, you mentioned in the post that the "earned about all of the components, how they are made, and how they resist wear". Can you elaborate on that? I thought I had read that because of the hi-beat movement, they required service on a more frequent interval?

When I get a minute, will send you to a link that explains a lot better than I can. A lot has to do with the materials they use. Also, it still achieves a 55 hours power reserve!

Having seen Carls cream dial auto and Quartz I can understand fully him flipping those two for this one. The GS's bat way above anything the Swiss can do under ten grand as far as I am concerned, way above!
In fact they have made me look really deeply at what the likes Rolex and Omega have to offer at similar prices and for me they simply do not compete in terms of fit, finish and quality and this is from someone who lusted after Rolex from a very early age! Holding Carls cream dial the other day made me wonder how they can give Patek quality ( and yes, I really mean that, it and VC or AP or their ilk are much more comparable brands in terms of fit and quality of finish than any of the other Swiss brands) at this price point.
I can't wait to see this one on Saturday Carl! It's great as well to have a local AD and I know that's imporant to Carl, They also take care of him so well it makes no sense to buy these from overseas as there is really no saving.

Wow, wow & wow again Carl. Congrats, as said above I'm shocked about the 2 you flipped. I can understand why without even seeing a GS in the flesh. The Seiko bug is a tough one to shake. I know from my Astron, it ticks all the boxes for me. God help if I ever get to see a GS in the flesh. Can't wait to see some wrist shots

carl did I miss something? I notice the Speedy Mark II is no longer in your signature. BTW I can't wait to see your pix on Thursday. Mark I sold the Mark II in order to get the GS. While I really do like the Mark II a lot, since I got the first two GSs, there is no denying that they are more my type of watch. They have so many attributes that I wish - and have been waiting for - Omega to come out with. The size of their watches keeps increasing, as well as the prices.
The selection of models in the 37mm - 40mm range is very appealing to me. As well as the detailing, especially the markers and hands, and I love that there is the absence of lume as well. Mind you, that detail on the Mark II I must admit is so exceptional, that the lume is actually very appealing.
