Maurice Lacroix JCK 2015
Maurice Lacroix introduces a number of new watches this year but focused on updating some of the fan favorites including the Pontos S Diver and last year's stunning contribution, the Gravity.
Let's start with one of my personal favorites, the Pontos S Diver. The original Pontos S Diver has been a huge success for the company thanks to its vintage, yet not dated, styling. This year they added a new model to the range.
The most obvious difference is, of course, the black case which looks tremendous on the watch.
The red accents have been swapped for orange and I especially like the orange rim of the pusher that moves the internal bezel.
I also liked the bund-style strap that loops under the case. This is a very solid addition to the line.
Tactical or classic? I think I lean slightly towards the classic myself, but the new blacked out case and orange accents is put together very coherently.
While not a new watch, they did have a nice Mystery Seconds on hand to look at. Believe it or not, this is the first time I've been able to see a Mystery Seconds in person, so this was quite a treat. The Mystery Seconds effect is as convincing as you'd expect and is definitely going to be one of the most eye catching watches out there.
Like all of ML's haute horology, it features an impressive in house movement, finished in their trademark industrial style.
There are two new updates to last year's popular Gravity, possibly my favorite Maurice Lacroix of all.
The new "classic" version replaced the blued hands with gold and drops the red accents on the subdial.
The hobnail-esque texture on the mainplate has been replaced with more traditional circular cotes de Geneve.
The new "modern" interpretation uses black dials instead of white and has a greater focus on red accents. The mainplate is also done in Geneva stripes, but this time in a linear pattern. Like their predecessors, I still find myself preferring the Classic, but they're both pretty jaw dropping, especially when you look at the silicon escapement.
I really enjoyed the new Pontos S Extremes. These 7750-powered watches bring a burst of color befitting the '90s-esque moniker but it was really the case that blew me away.
These watches continue the use of Lacroix's Powerlite alloys which combine metallic and ceramic ingredients to create a very light, yet super hard case.
Aside from those obvious properties, Powerlite has some cool benefits. I love the color--there's a variety available, but I really liked this one in particular. It has an almost pearlescent effect. In the unlikely event you scratch the case, don't worry, you won't cut through a coating--the color of a Powerlite case is not provided by a surface layer but continues all the way through.
They had a nice assortment of FC Barcelona quartz models available for fans of the team and there will be some 7750 based models available as well.
Myriad new Les Classiques models, including the Chronograph and Date models above, are added to their lines this year.
The Eliros Chronographe also had some great entry level quartz models like this classic version above. I was particularly infatuated with the blue Eliros Date.
I was disappointed that I couldn't see the wild new women's haute horology piece, the Power of Love, but I did get to view these lovely new Fiaba quartz models.
So what's my pick for best Maurice Lacroix of 2015? I'm going to go with the revised Pontos S Diver. The watch just looks amazing and I know from trying on the original that it looks and feels great on the wrist. It may not be as wild or exotic as the new iterations of the Gravity, but on the other hand, I think it appeals to a much wider audience and is, of course, much more affordable. I think the Pontos S Diver has a chance to be one of the core elements of ML's lineup and I hope they keep expanding on it.
