Stopped on a place today to price an Omega. I was told that on Feb 1, the price of all Swiss watches were going up, from $40 to $300, or something like that.
Has anyone else heard this? Sounds like a sales pitch on its face (hey, sir, this is the last one and I got another guy coming in to buy it so you better get it now!..).
Thanks for the info.

I'll call shenanigans on that one. ;D I would ask him just how are all Swiss watches going up in price, when they all have completely different distribution channels? Unless there is some new across the board tax or government applied fee it doesn't make much sense to me.

Talk about painting with a broad brush! However, when I bought my GO in December the AD and I had a pleasant discussion and he told me that many of the European makers were considering price increases for early 2008 to counter the falling of the dollar against the euro. He told me this after I had made the decision to buy, so I didn't consider it a sales pitch. Sadly, seeing how the economy has been going lately this actually makes sense to me. -Ben

He did say something about the dollar falling behind the euro. I was hoping someone else ahd heard somehting. I will rush and get it on Jan 31, but I don't want to feel like I am being rushed.

The dollar is defeinitely falling behind, but what strikes me as odd is he would say all Swiss watches, and all on the same day. To me that just smells wrong since I doubt all the watch companies get together and plan to raise their prices all at the same time due to exchange rates. Doesn't make sense to me.

I've heard the "weak dollar" explanation as well to justify upcoming price increases.

I called Tourneau, and they hadn't heard of that. The place I went offered to sell me the Omega Seamaster 300 M GMT for about $2850.
Maybe they are going up at their store, and wanted to make it sound like going up everywhere.
