Guys, there seems to be a trend on this forum that we are all getting into vintages.. chip and his speedy, mike and clifton with their rollies, erik with his clocks and waches, our new friends Jon, JM, gerrard and eric with their omega's etc etc.. the list goes on.. the only people that havent expressed an interest in vintages yet are GMT sam, chopps and a couple of others.. so which do you prefer.. vintages or new watches...and why? mamas

Is there an answer for both? I definitely want some vintages in my collection, but I'm buying what I want for everyday wearers first. In the long run, I'd like a 60's vintage Speedy & 1680 Sub. I think in general, I like new watches but they need to have a rich history....like the Sub, Exp II, GMT Master, and Speedy for example.

Man......I said vintage....because the question was "which do you prefer". I wear mostly modern because of practically. I need a box to check for both! How do you not like the warmth a crystal like this has??? [http://imageshack.us] [http://imageshack.us]

I always go for the NEW I'm attracted more to the newer models, not that some of the vintage aren't nice cause I really do like that thick crystal above, it looks great, but I'm more of a modern guy.

It's vintage all the way for me - out of all my Rolex watches, only one of them is modern. The rest are all either vintage or no longer available. Gotta love the acrylic crystal . Simply put, I feel a vintage watch has lots more 'character' but I agree that it makes more sense to wear a modern watch for practicality purposes. Do not like the servicing issues that can come with vintage though .

i also prefer vintage, although it has to be in a really good condition.. some collectors dont mind a bit of browning here, scratches there, dings etc etc.. i dont really like this prefer them to be in a good condition..As others have said, i actually like the older designs more, and love acryllic crystals, and the history of these watches.. mamas

I voted for vintage. Go figure. ;D
I think the biggest draw to vintage is the whole "they don't make'em like that anymore" aspect.
With a modern sub, you can just head down to a dealer and pick one up. A vintage takes time and patients and a lot of research. Once in hand you just can't take your eyes off of it.
I think the other big part is the history behind a vintage watch and the stories it has locked away. It is just cool to think about the life or action the watch has silently witnessed.

I voted vintage, although I mostly wear modern on a daily basis. I have so many vintage watches from my years at the pawnshop, and would have to say that some of those are my favorites. I enjoy them when I wear them thinking how wonderful it is that something this old still works as intended. Also, it's nice to occasionally wear a smaller watch.

I respect vintage watches, if they are from the family.
But i prefer new watches, the idea you are the only owner, nobody has done anything with your watch, no weird scratches, new out of the box, manual,...

Y'all know I really prefer vintage watches - in my case, railroad grade pocket watches . . . More and more folks are turning to vintage watches these days. I think folks are finding the quality and styling of these older watches to be worthy of having in their collections.

I prefer vintage. As Jon has said before, there is a real thrill to the hunt and finding just what you're looking for. Also, if you only look at new, you're limited to the handful of models currently being produced. Vintage opens up decades and decades of different designs.

I would say for the most part, I like new watches. But I think I see a Seamaster 300 like jons and mamas in my future for sure.
The exception is if it belonged to a family member, if so I prefer a vintage over new, just becuase I like the feeling of wearing something that my dad/ grandfather did.

I tried to do the vintage thing, but it was not me. I voted for the new one! :-)
