It seems to be an all too common experience those days, it’s happened to me many times. A sales lady at a big dealer in Dallas once told me “this might be out of your price range” when I asked to see a watch.

Fortunately, I am known by most of the ADs and boutiques here in town. And I don't usually dress up when I go downtown. But I do own some really nice clothes, just don't wear them to go shopping. So I either get "the look" when I go into a high end clothing store, or just get completely ignored. Holt Renfrew is a Canadian luxury brand retailer, and the only time I really got any kind of service at all was on my way to a nice dinner, wearing my Patek Philippe and finer clothes.
I never dress like a bum, always clean and tidy. With me, the deal is that I cant be categorized. I don't follow trends, have my own particular style, and I think that puts some people off. Vancouver is a very designer oriented town when it comes to clothing style, so if you are not sporting the latest trendy fashion you are generally out of the picture.
I avoid downtown Vancouver like the plague, except to mostly visit the ADs and watch boutiques. I can really relate to this guy's story. The irony for me is that one of my favorite watch shops is owned by an extremely wealthy gentleman, who loves his motorcycles and dressing in very casual clothing. He comes from one of the wealthiest families in the city, and is one of the most humble and down-to-earth people I know. He does wear a suit in the shop, and his employees are all well dressed and professional, but they also know that they must not judge a person by his/her clothing and general appearance.
At my stage in life I find it very disturbing that as a society so many peoples' lives are based on pretense and superficiality brought on by their own personal insecurities. If you cannot be true to yourself, then you simply cannot treat others as you would wish to be treated. Some of the wealthiest people I know are also the most humble. Strangely enough, some of the least wealthy will never know what it is to be humble. Most of the people who treat others like the guy in this video do not themselves have a pot to piss in.
Be proud of yourselves, guys! Even though this forum has a relatively small representation, we all treat others with the respect we would like to get from others. And that is the biggest pleasure of WWF!
Cheers, Carl
