Apparently it was a 5513 and the movement could still run, or did rather.

A short read but cool story, nonetheless. Serves as a nice reminder of what we already knew, how well build these watches are.

Love this story. I hope they update it as it moves forward to see if the owner is found, if it’s restored, or if Rolex buys it. I’m surprised it came off with the Velcro strap.

Agreed, it will be very interesting going forward, regardless. This is the type of thing Rolex is all about, rightfully so. Now I can better understand why some near beaches go snorkeling with metal detectors, especially after hearing about instances like this.

This is a true feel good story, what these watches are all about (enduring harsh conditions), and a good deed by the pro surfer who found it. For me it made for one heck of a story to follow, especially considering this positive update!

And here's the update! It's back with the original owner and serviced by Rolex!

Fratello understands that just one watchmaker at Rolex was the dedicated expert on the refurbishment from start to finish. The process took the greater part of six months, something that touched Ric. “I would like to say ‘thank you’ to that watchmaker because it’s clear how much love and effort went into this project,” he said. “We had lunch together with the Rolex team in Brisbane. It was missing for such a while that I had sort of reconciled with this sense of deep loss. I never thought it would come back to me, but Rolex was amazing. The people there were so good to me. They gave the watch so much special attention.”
