What noise annoys an oyster? Any noise annoys an oyster but a noisy noise annoys an oyster most. OK that was a silly question with a silly answer, my real question is what is the association between oysters and Rolex that I'm missing? Is it because diving for oysters is related to diving watches? I love oysters they are tasty little nuggets but I'm missing the connection between shellfish and watches. Please help to dispel my ignorance.

Both can be a lot of meters below the waterline without problems. Jocke

"In 1926, Rolex develops and patents the first airtight, dustproof and waterproof watch - named the Oyster." I assume they coined the term "oyster" due to the case being sealed up tight like an oyster.

Sam's right. My understanding is that Hans Wilsdorf came up with the idea and name after fighting with an Oyster at a party. (Humorous Cartoon Image?). Rambler

Rambler Yup, that is how Hans came up with 'oyster' for the case. I guess he got a real tough one to open and came up with that name. However I wonder how many realize the case is milled out of a solid block of metal? That is one thing that makes it water tight and so rugged. =) maverick
