So far... I almost want to say that the Nikon outperforms the Canon!

What kit are you using Chip? I thought you were a Canon guy? I have a 70-300mm lens I used in the Gambia in December - this is one of the results: (bit of a mean guy)

Looks great Chip, looks like you made the right choice In this case I don't think that there was a wrong choice, as both are more than capable cameras. There are things I like and things I don't like about both of them.

If you've got any money left you may want to consider a fixed focus micro (macro) lens. You really can't beat a 'prime' lens for tack sharpness. I have the 105mm Nikkor, but the 60mm is also excellent, for close-up work. Sigma make excellent micro lenses - the only reason I didn't get one was that they were out of stock with only the Nikkor available. My next purchase will probably be an ultra-wide angle - Sigma 10-20mm for landscape work... Anyway - your work is already photographically brilliant - this equipment will enable it to be enhanced! Have you considered selling your work (serious question)?

(Btw.. i didn't know you bought a Nikon) Big congrats on your new cam!
