When you first start looking at Panerai, all the different models can be very confusing. Part of the confusion stems from the limited production runs on certain models. So, if you're searching the net for pre-owned Panerai watches, you are often faced with a PAM (PAnerai Model) number such as PAM 00027C or PAM 00111G.
The number is the model designation and the letter is the series year. After the acquisition by Vendome in 1997, Panerai began identifying series starting with the letter A.
2005: H 2004: G 2003: F 2002: E 2001: D 2000: C 1999: B 1998: A
Also on the case back is the serial number, which in 1997 began with BB970001 and increases with time. The case number looks like OPxxxx and seems to be tied to the case type regardless of the dial. The production number indicates a particular watches position out of the total produced of that model that year.
For instance, my wife's PAM 00114 has the production number H048/700 so it's number 48 of 700 produced in 2005. Prior to the F series in 2003, the production number total included every dial colour of the particular model. Beginning with the F series, the number indicates how many of the particular dial style were produced.
I hope that helps to clear some of the confusion and makes getting on with acquiring your first Panerai a bit easier!
