we've all seem usually centre stage in any breitling AD's display window lies this little black box, a test module for the emergency transmitter, well i thought i'd give it a whirl today, talk about big boys toys it felt like being 007 opening the black attache case , plucking it and the tool / batteries from their individual specifically shaped cut outs in the case inners, priming the module then attaching the watch , the adrenaline was pumping im thinking sh!!t what if i drop a bo!!o(k , Thoughts of that signed disclaimer in the back of my mind!!! steve

So Steve....how exactly does that test box work? Pretty serious stuff you've got there. I guess if the authorities haven't shown up at your door yet, you must have done it right. ;D

Kinda curious myself. You don't hit some button and the Coast guard shows up or anything...Do they?

right then, when i placed the watch in the cradle and activated it, nothing much really just a pulsating signal emmiting from the test module, indicating that the watch transmitter has been activated and functional ! now im worried how does air sea rescue know i haven't just dropped out the sky, suppose it would require more than a 30 second burst for them to take an interest! you can also test the watch using your aircraft radio to pick it up tuning it to the required frequency to pick up the signal, "bBig Boys Toys" don't you just love em ! steve

Don't you just love having features like that you will never use. Something about it is just too cool. Sort of like buying a Sea Dweller instead of a Sub because you REAAAAALLY need more than the 1000ft depth rating.

Some people will use the Emergency or the Emergency Mission Sam; pilots mainly; often as backup. As for depth rating. Not wanting to hijack the thread; but I still think a lot of this depth stuff is about perception; how people perceive the item in terms of additional quality or ruggedness (some of this is true to some extent); and also how some may wish to be perceived - maybe having something rated higher (deeper) than something else. - Competition may play a part. This might apply to any watch or brand. For me the appeal of the SD is having no cyclops. But then I do like the 16610LV and the GMT Master II - try and work that out; not sure I can; but still like them (can't find smiley rolling his eyes - so that'll have to do). Just thoughts. Nice watch BTW Steve. Best Rambler

Nice watch BTW Steve. Best Rambler Rambler raises a good point.. many equate toughness and durability of a watch with how water resistant it is the speedy pro is only 30 m WR but is more durable than most divers!!! the 2 factors are very different.. toughness and WR!! i also bought my SD because i really just dont like the cyclops.. whther the watch has 100m WR or 1000m wr is irrelevanty.. i only dive to 30m so both depth ratings are more tha adequate for me! mamas

Rambler....not sure if you misread my post or something. I'm sure 1/10 of 1% of the people that buy something like the Emergency Mission will have a use for it....the rest buy it just because it's cool knowing you COULD use it. Just like the depth rating thing. There's just something cool about knowing "this watch can go XX feet/meters below the ocean's surface". Not that anyone will ever test the limits. Or buying a car that can go 200mph. Very few high end sports cars are used for their intended purpose. Once again, it's knowing that you could if you wanted to.

A good deal of the people that buy the Emergency and Emergency Mission buy it because of this function, pilots, sailors etc. etc. Yes, of course there are those who just like to have this feature and granted many buyers will fall into this category as well. Also, and I know you won't take this the wrong way - hopefully we're past that - people who buy fast cars generally like to drive them fast; maybe not 200mph; but speed of acceleration is definitely something that seems to be considered when getting a sports car, it's all part of the package. As well as the perception factors. OT - I know. Yes, I agree about the depth thing - that was my point though - that a lot has to do with perceived quality - maybe not to the WIS - but to the buying public at large - this may be some of the appeal.
