Hi first posting on here so a big hello to all you watch lovers out there. I'm looking at buying a new watch with a budget limit of approx £700. Like the look of Oris in particular the Complication which ticks all the right boxes. personal preference mechanical movements, have luminous hands and be water resistant. No real preference re leather strap or bracelet although may swim with watch on. Any thoughts re Oris or any other recommendations would be great. Or...do I look for a secondhand watch? again approx £700 thanks

Welcome to the forum! For £700 you're definitely in pre-owned Omega territory. And maybe even new if you find the right place and the right discount. I bought my black SMP (2254.50) for about that price. Oris would also be another good choice. I can't think of any reason NOT to buy an Oris. You might also consider Tissot. For your budget you have a lot of choices.

Welcome!
I think that in your price range the Oris Artelier Complication would be an excellent choice. Oris makes fine watches that aren't just visual copies of other makers. The Complication is a dressier watch, so I'm going under the impression that's what you are looking at.
Your price range is about $500 under the point where you could easily buy a new Omega or nice TAG. But, I think you could most likely find a whole selection of pre-owned in your range.
Most of the fun is in the finding.

Welcome here: 700 UK pounds is approx AU$1650 which would get you a very nice Swiss timepiece. Oris: This one cost me only AU$1050 new. This is the 300M model in Titanium: You'd be pressed to get a new Omega with your budget, but a good late model pre-owned Seamaster like this can be had with shopping around: If you can find a Breitling AD you may be able to get a superquartz model like this, for just for a little bit more:
