Man oh man, so many nice watches to chose from and the more I look the harder it gets to settle on one and stick there. The updated Rolex watches are amazing but something about the discontinued versions keeps coming back. Maybe the fact that these were the ones that started it all for me. Sadly getting all is not an option  It makes me really miss the good old days (back in 2004 - 2010) when the Submariner 16610 was THE one and only watch for me to have hints the forum name. Another Rolex for me is inevitable and after that I'll likely give other brands another shot (or so I think?). Looking at the popular modern models such as the 16600 Sea-Dweller, 16610 Submariner, 16610 LV Submariner, and GMT Master II 16710 it is no easy task. First off all are quite similar and I would be happy owning any of the above. Each seems to have it's pros and cons in my mind considering it would be my main watch for life. GMT Master II 16710  From - oysterpassion.fr AMAZING watch, rich history and the multi coloured bezels are nice but I'm not a fan at how much faster they seem to fade compared to the black inserts (the red part especially). Scratches and age is to be expected but a lot of these just a few years old listed for sale seem to look vintage already. If I got an LV Submariner, particularly the 2003 model it would be hard for me to put the Explorer II down and wear that considering it would be more of a collectors item I enjoy having. One of the later years though just might be a different story: Saw this listed on eBay and it's killing me (I just like to see what's listed but would buy from a known seller)      It's tough for me though, I like buying locally because playing the waiting game is no fun, not to mention it is a cool experience actually being there to go get the piece. Any suggestions or input to help me settle on one? Maybe I need to stop viewing the for sale sections or something  |

The GMT Pepsi is a classic! I'm not really into the modern ones, I guess I'm old-school I seem to be as well! Especially after looking at the prices and how they have jumped up. For the long run a part of me feels it would be cooler to have two discontinued pieces from now onward. Plus a big part of it has to be nostalgia. It was only a few years back but discovering the Rolex band through those pieces to me was like nothing else in the watch world as of yet. I remember being in high school and going on the Rolex site in 2004 and they had the LV on their home page and dreaming about having that some day. In Toronto though they're not easy to come by and when you do find one you'll have to pay, literally. |

It truly does! Seeing it reminds me of the first time I ever saw a Rolex in person back in 2004. I was at this watch store in the mall here that had one on the display. It was actually the black and red bezel insert but it had me blown away. See, memories like these along with the prices of the ceramic watches seems to keep me on the fence.

You gotta get the one that calls your name my friend. But for me I find it impossible to wear a Pepsi, don't like the colours, now if its faded to the max then yes, black bezel then yes as well. I saw a beautiful brown faded 1675 on VFR the other day and almost decided to inquire but the logical me said no. I'm a Sub guy, and all the Datejusts, Oysters etc. aren't gonna quell my desire for the iconic Sub. I simply cannot wear anything else, and this all stems from the first time I went to buy my first Rolex and couldn't afford the Sub and I had to settle for a $500 Date Precision, I loved that watch for 15 years and then sold it in 99 to pay bills. The next watch I told myself would be the one I really wanted, the Submariner! I've bee through at least 10 Subs since and honestly I don't think I'll sell mine I have on my wrist now, not for a 5512 (paying 3 grand for COSC cert doesn't seem like a good deal to me) in the end it's the same watch, the premium for the 5512 isn't worth it. The 1680 just doesn't sing to me, can't stand the top hat and a tropic 19 isn't meant to be on a 1680 and thus not correct. Sing baby, it's gotta sing.

If I have to start collecting, I'd probably go for those discontinued models. Somehow, I find something special about them over the the new generation models. They feel more durable for me but that's just my opinion of course.

Compared to the black bezel it does not seem as versatile in all settings. The good thing about that GMT is the inserts get listed for sale on various forums so it would not be too hard to swap for the Black and keep the original one in the box. No way! That's exactly what happened with me back in 2007! I was calling the AD, working overtime at the office and saving hardcore to go down to Bloor street (Toronto's version of 5th Avenue in New York City) and buy it. I'll never forget, at the time it was a Z Seriel 16610 the guy at the AD told me, one that was not even on display  Some things came up financially and I needed a rest so one day decided to leave the office early, go to the Toronto Eaton Centre to an Omega AD and buy the 2220.80.00 Seamaster. It felt nice, LOVED the watch at the time but quickly realized there is NO substitute for what was truly desired. Got bored of the watch and did not even want to wear it anymore but it took me until 2009 to buy the Planet Ocean. Same deal, it felt nice but after a few months there I was wishing it could turn into a Submariner. Long story short, it was hard but I decided to flip and not collect because it would take too long to get a Rolex from scratch and prices were starting to go up. Back in 2007 the Submariner 16610 in Toronto was $5,750.00 CAD including sales tax which was 15% at the time I believe (now 13%). They cost more than that now used... If I could spend some time looking at the 16610 in person it might rekindle this desire. The only problem is only pawn brokers / pre owned watch shops have them and there's no guarantee on the age or versions I'll get to see. The places here do have plenty though but it's nothing like the AD experience as nice as they are. At least over all it's narrowed down between a Submariner or GMT but even that has several options Oh, forgot to add, I hate Green Subs! If I got that I'd have to swap the insert. If I did ever have the 16610 LV I too would change the bezel insert. I like the way the green looks (for now) but in the long term it does not seem as versatile as the black again. Not to mention those are impossible to find for sale and when they do pop up it sells for several hundred dollars more than the typical aluminum insert. Also, that's for the pointed 4 versions that are not as valuable and sought after as the flat four 2003 production batch that is the TRUE Anniversary Submariner. They feel more durable for me but that's just my opinion of course. Exactly, I totally agree with that and it has to be a huge part of what keeps me going after them. They are among the last years produced of iconic pieces that are now changed. For me like with all of us we buy these because we have that passion but it no doubt seems to be sensible to hang onto or collect these discontinued models for the possibility of a financial gain in the long run after owning and enjoying for so many years. People seem to be hanging onto them too because it's not as easy to find what you want as it was when they were sold at the AD. The clasps, bezel inserts etc are all time proven and do not have some of the negatives of ceramic if it does get dinged. I still can not believe how the prices of these watches went up in the past 6 years. |

It's got to be the GMT mate, that's what I would pick The major advantage to the GMT in my mind is the function being very useful and fun, making the watch less boring after many years. Although the Explorer II has the same part number bracelet, essentially the same case with a fixed bezel, same crown, caseback etc the rotating bezel adds such a nice touch. The Submariner seems to be popular for a good reason, it looks amazing with anything somehow and "dress watches" are only necessary for those who desire. Although this is the ceramic version from an ad Rolex had on their site a while back (maybe still) it just shows this so clearly:  It's got to be a Sub ND for me, it's the only Rolex for me That's a really nice one that is exactly as they started. The Submariner no date has a very nice dial but thankfully for me I rely on the date function regularly so it's out of the question Owning one though would by no means be a bad choice as the watch is extremely sought after and as time passes and the discontinued models become harder to find for sale I'm sure having one could pay off. I think one with the old style box, anchor and hologram sticker removed and in tact would be amazing.
